How in the sweet fuck are Archie Andrews, Felix the Cat, Captain Marvel, and Plastic Man all public domain? How have other publishers not tried to take advantage of that? I can tell you, if Todd Loren hadn't been murdered by that serial killer from the gay bar he used to drink at, he'd be publishing his own Archie, Felix, Captain Marvel and Plastic Man comics with HORRENDOUS art.

I had no idea Femforce was all public-domain. And Erik Larsen based a whole line on golden-agers. Well, I knew he'd used the original Daredevil, the one who used 3D Man's tailor apparently.

Archie comics trademarked Archie's face, so that's a no-go.

Dreamworks currently owns the rights to the character

Marvel owns the copyright on the name "Captain Marvel" and probably has it trademarked too. DC has copyright and trademark on "Shazam" and probably his lightening bolt symbol. You'd have to avoid infringing on those rights when making a new Captain Marvel story, but at that point you'd be better off making your own Captain Marvel expy.

DC owns him and has a trademark on his distinctive belt.

Basically, nobody touches those big names because they've been carved up by other companies to the point that none of them are actually in the public domain.

The characters as depicted in their unmodified state are public domain.

DC owns Captain Marvel but he's legally distinct from the Fawcett-verse version by virtue of the world he inhabits.

A similar story with Plastic Man, who was originally published by Quality Comics.

Archie's a trickier issue as he's technically the same character in roughly the same world. You'll note on his PDSH page that it's the version in Pep Comics that's public domain.

As for Felix, yeah, he's damn near fully public domain.

What do you mean? Public domain is a thing in Europe. For example, Conan entered public domain in Europe last year. That's why Glenat began publishing Conan the Cimmerian.
