Freedom Fighters #1 written by Robert Venditti with pencils by Eddie Barrows and published by DC Comics was an exceedingly vapid disappointing book. It released on Wednesday, December 19th, 2018.
The character shown in the panel above is known as Uncle Sam. He is the central figure in this 12 issue iteration of the Freedom Fighters. The first issue is drawn well enough and the story takes place on an alternate earth where the Nazis won the war in Europe and went on to conquer the United States.
Nazis in story telling can be interesting characters as they are generally regarded as infamous. That infamy though is at least fading in some circles and particularly with the youth. Some blame the educational system but, I digress.
Freedom Fighters #1 doesn’t help the “Nazis are infamous” narrative and/or meme. The way the author portrays the Nazis in Freedom Fighters #1 is serious but more akin to a slapstick satire that is way worse than any Hollywood portrayal I have seen.
At the outset of the book Venditti, the writer. uses the term “Ratzi” in a somewhat disorientating manner. “Ratzi” is the term the Freedom Fighters and other “real Americans” use for the Nazis. The Nazis also hate baseball and the Olympic Gold Medalist Jesse Owens.
Jesse Owens is somehow, in a manner unexplained by the writer in the first issue a contact for the Freedom Fighters and actually involved in their resistance against the Nazis.

It should be illegal to defame and twist someone's history like they are doing to Jesse Owens. He loved his time in Germany and refers to it as the best time of his life. He became lifelong friends with Luz. He was treated with respect and dignity after his win. He couldnt walk down the street without being mobbed, not by racists, but by fans wanting autographs and shopowners/restaurants practically begging him to come into their stores. Hitler never snubbed him or did anything but praise him, despite what media claimed. When he returned to America, he had to enter through the servants entrance and was spit on and had trash thrown at him for his gold medal win. President wouldnt even acknowledge him or shake his hand.
To make him some double spy for America that hates Germany is a gross misrepresentation of his life and beliefs.

It makes no sense to change a real life person's entire life and belief system BEFORE the rise of Nazi Germany. It's literally 3 years after taking power. US is an ally. Majority of the US was pro-Germany even after war broke out. US protested Captain America comics because they focused on fighting Germany, a then country they were not at war with.

This is basically taking an Olympic hero and non-political figure and using the fact he was black and tangently related to Nazi Germany and using him as a political SJW object - not a human being. It's not a minor change or remotely comparable to something like Hickman's use of Da Vinci and other historical figures. It's not hundreds of years later. He died in the 80s. It's disrespectful. The only reason he is being dragged through this story is because he was black. He exists in their eyes as a fucking token black and they dont even respect his life and history.
You dont have to be pol to recognize how wrong this is and how this is not the same as making a comic book character evil in elseworlds tales. Thing is that they are nothing, and they have nothing interesting. You see, it is easy to get inspiration of nazis and communists when you write a totalitarian army, they have all kind of things that can work in fiction, since there were nazis and socialistic armies and they were famous all around the world. Then you have the propaganda, the uniforms, their method, the hierarchy, so you copy that and you have your cool setting.
There is not an ancap army nor transhuman goverment, so you can imagine them but at some point you would have to use real life reference to project it in your fictional setting.
I think writers should use other sources of inspiration besides nazis and commies, the same way middle age fiction could use something apart from France and England style of settings.

Thus, Nazi German couldn't simply settle for Europe. According to Nazi ideology, Germany's continued survival depended on expansion and the acquisition of resources.
