Because they thought Bendis had a name recognition big enough that they could not only hurt Marvel, but poach some Marvel buttfags at the same time. And were optimistic enough that if he was given carte blanche, he could recreate the success he had on Daredevil. Turns out the majority of his work over the decades is proof of his ability, that even his best work is overhyped, and reliant more on the art, where they should have just let Bendis sabotage Marvel from within.

The story so far does a really bad job at selling the witches as protagonists to root for and the "bad guys" feel really cartoon-ish, which for a "mature" comic is a big mistake, I bet 50 bison dollars that by issue 3 every male character is gonna be a strawman for "muh patriarchy" and "muh privilege"
