Why are today's writers so afraid of letting characters just be happy with the women they love without doing some bullshit drama to destroy it all?

 No.1031448

I think Dan Dildio said something about happy married heroes being boring or something.

He's a full. You can make interesting stories while still having characters be in happy families. Just look at Superman before Bendis came and destroyed it all. It was some of the best Superman material out there that just made you feel good for reading it again. A feeling that Superman has been missing for years.

 No.1031573

Because stories thrive off of drama. Having characters dating/get hitched and not mining the relationship for any kind of dramatic conflict is like building up to a Chekov's Gun that never gets used: it's set dressing that's aesthetically pleasing to readers but ultimately serves no purpose in the story. That's the kind of no-stakes shit that people usually mock in actual Mary Sue-tier writing.

>>1031448

Most writers would probably agree with Didio. Because happiness for the sake of happiness is boring. It's why it's something writers end a story on.

You can have your cake and eat it too, relationships are messy and can have drama in them but that does not mean character can't have happy/fulfilling relationships, How many times in the last 10 years has the batfamily broken up and got back together, that is much worse than just having them be happy together.

>not having your characters go through soap-opera bullshit is mary sue

ok then

The Phantom have been selling millions of copies world wide while being happily married to Diana Palmer. Fuck, the biggest issue ever i think is the wedding-issue at the death scull cave.

Not just Didio.

Western comics is a weird medium. Every writer wants to pull a classic death of Gwen Stacy or death of Elektra (first by Miller), but end up closer to Smith killing Karen Page or the infamous Kyle Rayner fridge moment. And most writers are hacks, where think only tragedy, only the worst events can make a good story.

>>1031573

Marriages, and families are their own drama. They have their own trials, and tribulations. They also are filled with whimsy, humour, and fun. Annoyed that both the now classic Spidey was before my time, and that Marvel has been so hamfisted with their X books, that I haven't had the heart to even pirate the current Gambit/Rogue series.

Don't think Bruce+Selina was ever going to be happy. But the Damian retcon was bullshit.

Which Damian retcon?

Shit. Because I have been avoiding Tom King's Batman, didn't see that it was a classic comics work. So it was "Deathstroke is Damian's father" followed months later by "Bruce is back to being the father".

 No.1031590

>>1031589

Figured it was that. Yeah it was just a pointless goose chase. Like every comic arc now.

>the infamous Kyle Rayner fridge moment

Kindly fuck off, Mrs. Simone.

 No.1031607

>>1031603

Yes. Simone made it infamous. Because a hack writer couldn't do tragedy. Thanks for coming up to speed.
