Grain of truth, this might apply in cases where you were asked to draw a subjective conclusion based on a set of facts. Say, you're taught a bunch of things about Incan history and then asked what were the contributing factors to the fall of the Incan empire. But it was because I was unaccustomed to the format. With better time management and understanding how the things were constructed, I had no problems by high school.
I've heard that an intelligent dyslexic person will also improve over time in a similar fashion after starting from behind. If Jeph is going for the autistic angle, from what I understand, the "jumbled neurons" apply more to speech than reading and other cognition, but I don't know for sure.

Which raises an interesting question - why is Clarence up on his feet and talking to them anyway? He does want to study at IPP's table, right?

Do you think old JJ has an endgame? Not like how the comic ends. I mean how he ends. Is he just stalling until he hits 50, at which point he checks out with a crate of Jack and a small pharmacy's worth of painkillers?
Not that I think he'd have the balls, but he has to know that his current lifestyle isn't sustainable. Some day he's going to say something wrong and be declared an unperson, just like everyone else. I mean, he probably hasn't thought of it except in his wildest depressive episodes, but he's not getting any younger, and the odds of him supporting himself in his old age with his "art" are slim to none. I doubt he's saving as much as he should be.
Or hey, maybe he actually hasn't realised this yet, and he's still desperately clinging on to being one of the "youth", the next generation that will blue wave the world's problems away. I hope so. The hit to the ol' ego when that falls away will be great to watch.

The arcs get worse and worse on average but once in a while it's clear when Jeph is at least kind of sort of doing what he wants. You can tell by the arc being more than 5-10 strips. Menstro's memories and Hannelore's secretary are examples of this. Of course both of these fell flat and even the hardcore fans on the forum complained loudly, which is probably why Jeph wrote out Hannelore, the most popular character, as some sort of spiteful punishment.
>>1035524
Jeph's whole life is stalling. Quitting his minimum wage temp job to write the comic was the last bold thing he's done. I guess moving to Canada for e-pussy counts but that's more dumb than bold. Even the comic's production is stalling. The reason it appears at some random time from 8:00 PM to 2:00 AM is because Jeph has been procrastinating nearly every night for 15 years to get the next strip out. If he really had a buffer, he'd set up a scheduler and not operate a system that required him to be available to manually post late every night.
Jeph's life is unsustainable more due to you don't get old operating a free webcomic more than anything else. People point to Jim Davis but Davis' real skill was being a pioneer in syndication, licensing, and merchandising. Garfield was in every newspaper along with on TV. It had its own line of compilation books, plushies, jigsaw puzzles, lunch boxes, etc. And, there are even video games over a 30 year period.
QC isn't on this level, largely because Jeph refuses to franchise or license and doesn't market to beyond the people who are already readers. As a result, there is no webtoon, no flash game, and the plushies are 10+ years old.
>he's still desperately clinging on to being one of the "youth"
Jeph really is the embodiment of the "boomer millennial" meme. Someone who thinks he's still with it with his references to bands from the late 80s/early 90s and Super Nintendo games. Someone who thinks Minecraft Let's Plays are what's in like it's 2010.

The Cute Critter blogs on Tumblr just started posting and sharing pics of borzois one day, and they've kind of become one of the more preferred breeds on the site. Artists tend to draw them, especially if they want to go for an ethereal, otherworldly canine, and it always seems that people who otherwise wouldn't give a rat's fart about dogs will reblog and coo over the borzoi pics.
As for the why, it's probably because they have a rather distinctive appearance, making them easy even for people who know nothing about dog breeds to identify.
Personally, I think they look both dumb and slightly creepy.

Even the most idealistic show ever Star Trek focused on futuristic militaries. Though Jeph is probably one of those guys who cries about minimum wage not supporting an entire family while simultaneously advocating for unlimited importation of foreign low-skill labor, so naivety (or just idiocy) is in his blood.
The cut off dialogue box in panel 2 looks really unprofessional, even for Jeph. The box also cuts into Menstro's head yet there is a ton of whitespace. Sloppy.
And they wear winter clothes and put hands in pockets for warmth. What the hell. Jeph really misses the point of what these bots are supposed to be. They're not supposed to be 1:1 humans with different color "skin", they're supposed to be a different but equally valid lifeform. I know Jeph's watched TNG. He should rewatch episodes like "Measure of a Man" for inspiration.

Just another iteration of the non-standards of post-modernism. It's like the Amish: a heavily romanticized lifestyle that wouldn't be possible without the superior society surrounding it. I wish I could be a fly on the wall when one of these sheltered adult babies enters the workforce, discovers that one must do annoying shit to actually get paid, and try to use "this doesn't fit my vision of myself" to get out of it.
Actually, I have seen it, but not in the same room. There was a millennial employee being driven to work by the owner/CEO because she had "temporary" car issues, decided she liked being driven, and declared the owner/CEO her butler. Then she was fired, which apparently caught her by surprise. I would have loved to see the facial expressions of everybody involved in those exchanges but had to settle on a second-hand account.
These people are fucking loopy and don't fit into corporate culture at all. I don't read business mags all that much but I've noticed a downtrend of articles that implore businesses to bend the knee to every millennial demand with the promise of future dividends paid. I think CEOs have had it with that stuff, especially since these people quit at the drop of a hat and often don't even break even when considering the training costs.
Not all of them are like this and the other side have their own issues. For example, the more conservative (and attractive) millennial women tend to be harder workers but they'll decide to become mothers in the 25-28 age range and just up and leave the workforce, so you need to get them in their early 20s or mid-30s after they get bored of being housewives. Of course when you hire them back at the same salary, they'll complain about working at the same rate as they left, not really considering that you don't really increase your corporate value by being a housewife for a decade.

Which raises an interesting point. If AIs are so downtrodden they need an AI rights drop-in centre or whatever, how many other repair shops could there possibly be?
So the reasons Fat Repairs is so quiet are either there are so many repair shops that it's a crowded market (but that makes no sense if AIs are so downtrodden and have no rights; why would anyone cater for them), the robots can't afford it (which was stupid of Faye to set up a business, the target market of which can never afford what it has to offer) or they're just plain shit at everything related to their business.

It probably means how your brain pastes generic patterns taken from the surroundings over your blind spot so you think you have a continuous arc of vision. Or collates the three colours you actually see to give a reasonable simulation of the frequency spectrum between them for most purposes. Stuff like that, where the senses you experience are actually more detailed than the sensory input you get.
To relate this to machines, consider data compression. You take a file and replace as many generic sequences of data as you can find with markers for those sequences. The resulting compressed file is smaller, and can be unpacked into the working file again as long as you have a key matching the generic sequences to the markers. Senses work like that except you didn't encode the file and the markers don't always match the original sequence, but it provides a reasonable facsimile.
A lot of image editing software has functions to do something like this actually. The most obvious example would be the sharpen tool, which defines where it "thinks" the edge is on indistinct objects, but there are others that will try to, say, add a facsimile of detail to a low res picture which has been scaled up. Human senses will do this for pretty much any case in which it would work more often than not. Proprioception is an example of a purely virtual sense. It's collated out of your senses of touch and muscular feedback, but you experience it as being a distinct sense of where your limbs are in relation to your body.

That's because Jeph has completely given up on meeting new people and drawing inspiration from life. The only people that want to meet him at this point are tumblrinas and trans psychos. A lifetime ago, Jeph was introducing new human characters that were based on people with real issues and/or backgrounds, but since Jeph now just stays in his own bubble and keeps his communication with the world isolated to social media circlejerks, he took the cheap route by making the story steer its focus on the robots because he can make them however he wants with no realism. It's like science fiction for dipshits: the robots are people and the people are robots.
Hell, the last new human character was this shit show in the pic, and Jeph learned that trying to appeal to gender non-specific queerbaits is never a good idea because there's nothing those people hate more than having a mirror held up to them.

If this wasn't a lolrandumb waste of time, Cowsmasher would undoubtedly be lying about the incident and there would be broader implications to this exchange, like this being a red herring alibi setup, or the "cow pieces" are the remains of a murdered human, or Cowsmasher actually killed the cow on purpose with it's hands that are now damaged, or this is a malfunctioning farm assistant, or anything more interesting than watching hipsters talk about their vapid sex friend arrangements.

It actually kinda annoys me how Menstro flip-flops between technical terms and colloquialisms, etc. Like, it calls the cow parts "bovine remains" yet regards Faye as its "girlfriend" rather than "human companion".
And I still don't see Menstro regarding faye as much more than a "companion" - if it wants company and emotional support, fine, but with its super-autist behaviour I don't see it wanting any sexual contact at all.
Actually, the more I think about it the more it bothers me - we have here what could be the first human-AI pairing in the town (if not the world) and no-one cares or says anything about it, and they're already acting like they've been married for 10 years.
Aliens could land in this town, and they'd just go to the coffee shop.

Also, the blank white with body socks look is retarded. If this is representing pure machine communication, then the chassis and body language are inappropriate. If this is Lemon's simulated "coping space", then she is the worst therapist ever.

I was digging around in my archives and rediscovered this comic I drew as a love letter to our old shenanigans around here. I used to create OC for this general back in late 2015-early 2016. I drew a few of the covers (the credit of which was misattributed to the original coverfag) and did a couple guest edits in December 2015 when Editfag had to hang up his hat.
Unfortunately, I never ended up finishing. I wanted to complete the comic before ever showing anyone, but as 2019 rolls in I have come to accept that I will probably never revisit it. It would be a waste to never share it, so here it is.
You might recognize the art from that one sinister drawing of Jeph in the imgur OC archives, which I posted here as a teaser almost three years ago. I planned for it to span ~20 pages or so, detailing the strange dream Editfag once told us about: Editfag, presently on the lam, has been cornered in a motel by Jeph with a shotgun, who plans to put him in kangaroo court for hurting his fee fees. They end up getting trapped by a blizzard and are forced to become a weird odd couple. Pic related for the original greentext. In the end I only ended up completing 4 pages. I have a very VERY rough and unfinished fifth in psd form, but I promise if it were anything worth looking at I would have posted it.
I hope you anons enjoy, and Happy New Year.

>they always have the most paperwork
>they always have the most maintenance to do
>they always have a fuckload of shit dumped on them by the rest of the boat because we need to do things with our equipment which requires their equipment
>the reason for the way they are is the environment they work in and the world they come from, which was a year and a half school that teaches them to be perfect at being a nuke
>they are taught all about the reactor and how much they suck
>also a lot of them try out suicide because it's like going to super college straight out of grade school
>it would make the most sense for a fucking nuclear reactor, which is around a bunch of downer fucks who are always shit on, would be depressed
>"Lol no one wants to invite a reactor technician AI to parties, that's why it's depressed"
If anything, an AI would be less inclined to being depressed as a RT because they would be able to easily handle the quick processing required to solve any problems that come with reactors, which boils down to haha keeping the rock from overheating too much and keep the reactions from stopping when you want them going.

Most of his assets are studio gear, which sells on the secondhand market for 40 cents on the dollar. I actually have no idea what the market is for guitars with prime numbers of strings but I'll bet it's depressed compared to regular four and six string guitars.
These kinds of guys often think running their own businesses is an asset if/when it comes time to go back to the job market, but employers are looking for people with predictable packaged skillsets and not wannabe consultants that nitpick how every aspect is different from when they ran their own business and who end up attempting to take over, which is usually how it goes down.
No.1043699
>>1043685
>secondhand guitars
The market for secondhand guitars is weird, at least from what I've seen. Unique models like a seven-string might go for a lot, but the problem is finding a buyer. Your only potential customers are serious collectors or serious musicians. And no serious musician is going to pay a premium for a secondhand instrument when there are whole companies that offer such unique instruments, so get ready to knock 50% off your asking price easy. Collectors only care about guitars if they have a history behind them or are part of a limited run from a big brand name; I'm betting neither apply to Jeph's axe.
Jeph's history of running his own studio might, I say might, work in his favor if another big studio is looking to start up a new franchise operation and needs a general manager quick. I don't know how successful his studio business is, but I'm betting not that successful, so he's going to look at some stiff competition if it comes to applying to be a glorified store manager.
My advice to Jeph would be this: hire a ghost artist to draw your comic for you, that way you only need to worry about writing the script. Then throw all your effort into 2, preferably 3, new and different comics. Alice Grove tanked and tanked hard, true. But that's the nature of the game, you can't just bet everything on one title, especially not one that's been going since 2003. The Plucky Kids Vs. Evil Monsters genre is big now, and we know you can write at least passable 20-something Hipster Romance; why not try a story about some college kids fighting ghosts or something? Scooby-doo that shit.
But he wont', because the safe and easy route is made for fat cunts like Jeph.

>the problem is finding a buyer
Yeah, that's the problem I anticipated. I'd expect the common potential buyer reaction is something like, "That's so cool…but I don't know how to play a seven string. I just want a regular guitar." Like you implied, anyone looking for such a thing is seriously into the market and probably doesn't need to save a few bucks on a non-commodity item. Meanwhile all you need to do to quickly move a regular guitar is price it slightly below the going rate, probably. Also, I imagine the buyer's market to be mostly teenagers and mid-life crisis dads so they're just looking for something familiar.
As far as I know, Jeph's studio is just a room in his house. I don't think he actually runs a business with it; he just uses it to produce an album once every few years. Even if it was a business, how much could he do with a room in his house in Halifax?
>hire a ghost artist to draw your comic for you, that way you only need to worry about writing the script
Yeah, I thought he should have sublet the comic years ago, a la something like Garfield or Penny Arcade. He could remain as a "big picture" advisor, which is probably all he wants to do anyway.
>throw all your effort into 2, preferably 3, new and different comics
Really any kind of diversification would do. QC can't last forever and Jeph will be unemployable in the end. No one is going to hire a middle-aged illustrator starting all over who doesn't have a formal education and doesn't even fully grasp basic technical concepts like Photoshop layers. I can't imagine what bad habits he's picked up that would make integrating into a team more of a hassle than it's worth.

It's even more basic than that. We figured out that their price is comparable to a game console and Momo's shopping trip established that there are so many chassis available that there are mall outlet stores that sell them. Here's something ridiculous that I just thought about for two seconds; why would robots envision themselves in a metaphysical cyberspace as their primary bodies? I know it's that thing where you as a human will astral-project into a form that is most like yours, but it makes no sense for any of the information; this is, in fact, a great time for both entities to take no form at all and carry out a conversation that is purely text.
>each page would read like a text document with the two characters interacting as if on a chat-log
>mention of melonballer could be described and then a quick panel of watching it happen, then right back to text
>it's simple enough and more cost effective for handstab since he can't be arsed to draw up anything good
>from a computer perspective it makes entirely more sense since running a program to create a pointless virtual space is is just a waste of money all around
There was an easy and fun way to do this and he chose to make it not make sense
I'm also betting purple nurple will have no problems fitting into her new body and there will be no character development from it. Speaking of characters developing, initial D had an episode where our main character raced his shitty little car so hard that the engine fucked itself and blew out, so his dad used his savings to buy a new one. You know what came of that? He fucking had a whole series of episodes where he couldn't figure out why the fuck his car wasn't handling the same; he even learned to ask about it and find out more about the internals of a car, unlocking the hidden potential of the engine by changing out some of the parts and unlocking his own potential as a racer. There will be maybe 5 strips dedicated to bread fucker and dealing with her new body, where there was so much potential to say, "hey we have to give you an older, cheaper model because you lost your benefits when you quit the force," and then follow the adventures of a character who now has to deal with the musculature timing and limb strength and speed of a completely new form. wait, do they not do any kind of psychotherapy to ready the mind for being in a new body? I mean, if they're going to treat them like humans, because they basically are at this point, why wouldn't they do what humans do when they lose and entire fucking limb; you have to undergo therapy to feel comfortable using a fucking prosthetic because it's not naturally apart of your body, and on top of that you will feel a phantom pain because the muscle memory in your brain is still functional while the limb itself is gone.
Basically why the fuck is she not going through robot therapy to mentally sync her mind to her new body if she feels desynced with it?
And why the hell does only her neck have a weird joint thing, wouldn't they have fixed that with newer models so you can't see the joints; her arms clearly don't have joints, because jeph is probably forgetful, but if there's that line between them still that means there's some kind of separation; the joints seem necessary if you want to switch out broken pieces so that you don't have to get a replacement synth skin for your entire body every time, but I know he wasn't thinking about that, so why is only the head easier to access?
Why?

And paid to whom? I just assumed that Lesbo&Sexbot inc. would be doing the work, but they're fixing Crushbot instead.
So we have a veteran police AI that suddenly quit the force with a weak excuse. A few days later, her chassis (that was perfectly fine while doing years of police work) is completely destroyed by a random, well-insured passerby. Within 24 hours, claims are made, requests are processed, money is awarded, and the only available chassis for this maligned AI are the very expensive, brand-new versions of her old chassis, so Roko is forced to pay out a large amount of a huge settlement to an insurance approved "Bodyhub" company we know nothing about just to get up and moving.
As if this wasn't alreday highly suspect, who was it that sued Crushbot for damages? We saw the entirety of Roko's experience, and the money was already being given to her when she "woke up". What we are left to assume is that Crushbot sued himself on her behalf, since he was the only party even tangential to the incident.
If I were a detective, and I saw this chain of events unfold, I would suspect that Roko is now working for whatever insurance company Crushbot does, and part of her sign-up bonus was a big chunk of cash and a state-of-the-art chassis.
Either that, or this whole thing was a money laundering scheme, and Roko got a cut.

I ask you, /co/:
Is it just that internet fame wraps bad artists in a comfortable cocoon of no criticism that causes them to stagnate and eventually devolve?
Or is that people who are legitimately motivated to grow their skills and nurture their abilities eventually grow beyond the confines of mere internet fame, stepping out into the real world of real artists?
For me, I think it's a little of both.

For fuck's sake, Jeph! At least show us some consequences of this supposedly poor synchronisation with the new body!
It could have dropped that cup of coffee it was carrying. Tripped over a step. Keep missing the light switch - anything!
Roko has had this new body for all of 5 fucking minutes and the drama is like a 5 year old complaining about a new pair of shoes.
And I'm not getting the big drama behind asking to be "fixed". So far we see absolutely no stakes, no risk. Shit, getting a haircut would carry more threat than this proposition 'cause at least then Roko could be stuck looking stupid for a while.
Jeph could so easily have had the trannybot reply with something like, "You know what means though, don't you?" or something else cryptic if he doesn't want to give too much away instead of having it just stride away - that's what it would do if Roko hesitates after an offer is actually made, saying something like, "Oh well. I guess you can't want it that much, then…".
Again, it's like Jeph knows in his head how the story is supposed to proceed but forgot to add a few panels when it actually comes to drawing it. Since it's clear he doesn't read his own work, he just remembers that he did add all the required information so doesn't bother checking.

It sure is good that the unaccountable, many-headed omnipotent AI panopticon that rules over the gay hipsters of QC has "ethics", that makes me feel much better.
It's a hamfisted attempt at justification that plays to the morals of the social justice types who think that justice can be accelerated like everything else in the world. That whole pesky "due process" thing doesn't matter if the judge, jury and executioner are always right, and what could be more always right than an AI? Never mind that robots in this world are basically quirky humans with unnecessary neck and shoulder seams (when Jeph can be bothered to draw them) and a surprisingly intermittent data connection.
It's the same meaningless moral bunt that transhumanists always make and it's only made worse by being filtered through Jeph's writing style, which is like trying to infer important details from someone talking in their sleep.

This shit raises more questions about the lost memory arc - if it was such a massive dilemma, why even help Menstro at all?
If it just wants to help AIs, then why not help all those who have to go to that bullshit drop-in centre?
If the implication is that there may have been something in Menstro's memory it really needed, and so badly that it was willing to violate its own ethical code, why involve the cast of idiots at all and not just do it on the fly, or at least away from any prying eyes? Or infultrate Pinkbot first before doing everything else - it ended up in Pinkbot, anyway after all so that wasn't such a problem.

Option C, the internet is revealing a phenomenon as old as time, not causing it. Bad artists have always outnumbered good artists, the internet just puts them on stage in front of an infinite pool of sycophants.
I'm sure those of us who read webcomics can all think of artists who really blossomed as they went right? They experimented with shading, they added detail, they learned to compose drawings and pages, they developed perspective sense, they went back and unlearned the various bad habits and crutches you might need as an amateur artist but which start to slow down your process once you improve… I could go on but the point is those people received idle praise the whole time and would have if they'd done none of that because there's always a fucking cheer section in your audience.
So I say it's deterministic and independent of the internet. Bad artists would have taken any excuse to fuck around, being told you're already perfect is just a flowery sounding one. Good had the will and talent to improve and being told they're already perfect evidently didn't throw them off the trail.

It's an interesting window into the psyche of these people. They see themselves as messiahs but it's such a thankless burden ruling all the little people that are also abused beyond the scope of mere tyranny. Thus the Alice Grove reference as the titular character held a similar position though was even more powerful and even less accountable.
Also, why would anyone trust the judgment of robots that are even moodier than regular humans? When it had the ability, Momo shocked people out of spite. Menstro hulk smashed a wall because it can't manage the emotions it has to reason to possess. May is openly misanthropic. Yeah, I'll trust them to be my judge. Ironically I think I'd trust Corpse Witch or Pintsize more than most of the others.

And nothing of value was accomplished. It went in only to verify what Emily already confirmed. I guess I can see the potential utility, but Jeph really didn't set this up as a viable option in advance.
>it's just gross
It's even worse. You have a comic where identity and autonomy are central subjects. You have an AI character that inhabits multiple simultaneous instances. Then you have a situation that is basically like a Vulkan mind meld between the multi-AI and the regular one. What a perfect opportunity to explore the meaning of identity with the intersection of all this! But, no, it's gross. Oh, and merging of identities and loss of identity were issues with mind meld, so Jeph even has long established sci-fi canon to draw upon.

Self-improvement seems to be an inherent male trait. I understand it's not universal, but it seems incongruous to be a successful professional and lack this trait. Things get very boring if there is no improvement over time. I can't speak for everybody, but I'll find myself optimizing pointless things if there is nothing else to do, just to chase some sort of improvement-related dopamine hit. I mean even ivory tower Hollywood actors with more money and fame than they can deal with still seek challenging projects. I also understand there is a skill ceiling, but I'd expect a mediocre talent to be criticized for being samey, uninspired, merely competent, cargo cult, etc., not to be objectively bad. Jeph is still on the level of a grade schooler with no real training.

It's almost like in order to have a character arc, there must be a low point and a high point, such as starting as a cynical and unpersonable bastard into a town hero and a generally great human being.
It's not like Jeph or any writer understands that though in this age, for some reason the hero has to be a paragon of absolute justice and selflessness, otherwise they become too complex and might actually do something someone doesn't like and wouldn't appeal to a broad audience.
I think that's what I hate the most about these comics; none of the characters really grow at all, there's no conflict in their lives that changes who they are. There are some plotlines in which a character brings up themselves as an antagonist, or maybe two characters find something out about each other that makes them think, "Oh maybe could you not?" At the end of the plot line there is some fucking macguffin that they use to fix it and it's just remembered as "that thing that happened once."

And they seem to think it'd be plainly obvious that the way out is to become a "better person."
Which is ironic, because these people don't beleive in redemption; if they find a reason to hate someone (and boy, do they look for it) then they latch into it and never let go - the only result they want is for the object of their hate to be denied a living and to collapse into a pit of desperation, depression and misery.
That's why they like the "bad guys" in their lame webcomics to be like pantomime villains - so it's clear and obvious that you're supposed to hate them, just because.

SJW style of story telling is a Mary Sue token minority. There is no movement from A to B because the Mary Sue is perfect to begin with. Like with Poochie, the other characters' roles are to remark about how perfect the Mary Sue is.

Imagine if Clinton met a girl and took her out. They both have quite a bit to drink and end up at Clinton's place. The next morning she says she didn't mean to go that far and doesn't know what to think about the experience. Other characters find out and arguments ensue about each character's culpability. The comic itself takes no solid position but, still, some characters distance themselves from Clinton while others close ranks. Most critically, Claire feels compelled to condemn Clinton but just can't due to familiar ties. Of course these actions have knock-on effects. Maybe even contrast Claire's support of Clinton to Dora's ostracization of Sven. Man, that could generate months of meaningful storytelling. Nah, let's have a character sit in a room and feel sorry for herself for two weeks. That's more engaging.
