I've only seen the John Candy movie and read a single Arzach comic, so I have next to no familiarity with the actual magazine. Is it an insightful science fantasy anthology with fantastic art, political mouthpieces for 60+yo boomer artists, or somewhere in between?

Also, just how fucked is the magazine now that grant morrison is editor?

 No.1020389

The 1980s and 1990s were the best times. Lots of Moebius comics, Horatio Altuna,Juan Gimenez to just name a few. It was at its strongest during the Eastman run. The national lampoon years were alright. They interviewed some comic greats like Will Eisner at times. The cover art was always something out of a fantastic dream or terrific nightmare.

When did it begin to nose-dive, and what/who is responsible?

 No.1020415

>>1020400

I would not call it a nose dive. Heavy Metal started as a mixed bag, got pretty good, and slowly became a mixed bag again. As to why, I would say that they ran out of backlog of European shit to put in and many of the artists who would once be interested in contributing went to places like vertigo and independent publishers over the years, and more recently to comixology, gumroad, and crowdfunding.

Heavy Metal Killed Music

Time just passed. The print industry was killed by the internet. The cost of doing the magazine in America was relatively cheap because the artwork was already printed and created so all they had to do was translate for the states. Having the internet also removed the barrier between creators and artists. I'd say when 2000 rolled around and the most active artists were no longer doing their thing is when it began to decline.

I have maybe about 50 back issues. The catchphrase of the magazine used to be The Adult Illustrated Fantasy Magazine to Illustrated Fantasy Magazine.

I think it's well worth buying at Half Price Books or your local comic store if you can find it. Lots of the stories are fun and its 1980s 1990s edge is so worth it.

It didn't help either that sometimes European comic albums were reprinted out of order or missing chapters. They made it up by offering English complete editions on their website or through the magazine

There were some seriously underrated artists as well. See Jean Claude Gal, for instance. He only has a small article on the french Wikipedia page, and the dude is way too skilled to be this unknown.

Nobody teaches classical art these days, it's called "fascist art" by the finger painters and performance artists who have taken over the art industry.
