It was 'lol random' back before that was really a thing. As far as surviving today? Probably not, but you can't really make something like freakazoid these days.

As stupid and random as it was, there was a lot of effort put into the animation and designs. Today it would be made with low effort flash animation, and that would mostly make it feel cheaper and less risky. When you had the WB superhero animation going full bore into a slower scene where Freakazoid goes into a ramble, you kind of feel it more. It isn't just a 4 second scene made by tweening a few frames automatically and running the voice acting through a lip flap syncer. Even when it's running a joke into the ground on purpose the jokes have at least some weight.

Also lets remember that superhero shows and action cartoons were way more prevalent at the time it appeared. A parody coming out when there are dozens of shows for it to work with is a lot more fun than when one comes out when the genera is dying. (Hence why people hate TTG and Thundercunts)

That really puts it into words! You could tell every bit was made with something the writers and animators had in mind. It was funny to them and thats why they did it. It felt like being let it on a really silly inside joke

One of the things that made it work, besides the people involved just having a good time and writing the show they wanted to see, was the design document that every production has, describing the world, characters and giving motivations and insight into everything that went on in Freakazoid.

It's sad because its the perfect time to have such a pastiche of super hero shit, what with Marvel being so popular and social media being so popular.

But no one exists who could carry it. They would play it too safe, use memes, etc.

I guess thats the real issue. Cartoons nowadays are too calculated and safe except like a select few. They either dont make jokes for themselves or dp and have really lame tumblr-tier senses of humour.

It was from an era when you could have nonsequential humor without it being attacked as cringey or without having to load it down with a layer of irony becaues the writers thought they were above it all. It was from a different era and really wouldn't be viewed the same way today. Most likely it would end up being meta or "ironic" like how teen titans go! currently is.

Paul Rugg is such a fun person in general. Everything about him seems so genuine. Here’s to the Animaniacs reboot not having any of the writers back.

Just having watched this for the first time (since I was a kid) 2 seasons is enough and season 1 was much funnier

That, or it's the term on how "liking something ironically" is so muddled that sincerity is completely at a loss. At some point, it's just drawing attention to how terrible itself is so often that it blurs into a loathsome apathy to the craft.

Gets me thinking: given that 99% of today's shows are flash based mouth-eye flappers a la Rick and Morty of Family Guy, what would a parody of them be like? A show where the very limited animation and randomness is played to a dramatic effect and where every random action has an actual weight on the plot instead of being self referential humor?

A parody of Rick and Morty would be Rick and Morty played straight. Which would take effort and creativity since you would need interesting stories to tell where the point isn't just nihilism and actually well designed and interesting aliens.
