DC has continued to republish old Superman stories with racist depictions of Asians. I'm going to guess that the cancellation lies squarely on the comics news sites. Most of the articles about the book going back into publication bring up that it's racist and controversial. DC was well aware of the content of the book when they agreed to do a nice hardbound edition of it and probably assumed that anyone who drops a lot of money on a deluxe edition of an old comic would be mature enough to be able to read something and accept that it was a product of its time. Then all the comics sites started bringing up the racism and DC or WB got concerned that it would be used as ammo for hit pieces in bigger news sites when the Shazam movie comes out.

There's a number of reasons they canned it, and probably the biggest reason is that they technically don't own it and thus can't enforce copyright on it.
See, nearly every single issue of Fawcett's Captain Marvel series, from Whiz Comics to Hoppy the Marvel Bunny, are in the public domain. You can download them all legally from Digital Comics Muesum and DC can't do squat to stop you. So why go through all the work of publishing something if you can't have exclusive rights over it?
It's a big reason, I think, why DC is happy enough to print their shitty 70's Captain Marvel revival, which they own outright, but will never publish collected versions of his original adventures.
