>Superman's undies serve a design purpose, breaking up the massive field of blue and creating color balance, but, more importantly, it serves an iconographic purpose.
And there are other Superman costumes that achieved the same fucking thing sans undies.
>Superman had virtually the same costume for seventy three years. Those trunks appeared in cartoons, movies, and video games in that time, and became iconic, much like Doctor Who's police box or Mario's mustache. They became a visual signifier of Superman.
No, they fucking didn't. Superman's shield is the only immediately recognizable thing about him (it's one of the top three most recognizable symbols on the planet apparently) and if you removed it but kept the trunks and all the other shit, it wouldn't be Superman. If you removed the trunks and kept the symbol, people would immediately think it was Superman. Having the same shitty costume for seventy three years doesn't mean shit, if Batman fans or Iron Man fans were as autistic as you Superman oldfags, they would still be running around in their ugliest costumes today.
>When they removed them, it created doubt. Yeah, he had the cape and the shield, but without those schlong shielding shorts, people couldn't really be sure that it was, indeed, Superman. It could be a different character, like a Superboy or something. So they, especially kids, turned away.
Oh, bullshit. Superboy wore trunks too, y'know. Or did that fact conveniently slip your memory?
>That's the shit you fags don't understand. It's not just the trunks, but the whole image that comes with them. It's why japanese toku programs go to the effort of recreating the costumes of old heroes instead of just redesigning them. They want to capture the thoughts, memeories, and feelings that come with that original appearance, something that was lost when DC ditched the trunks.
You just discredited your own argument by trying to weasel-word Jap toku not "redesigning" but "recreating" old costumes when they are really doing the same shit that DC is doing - updating the costume. You traditional "fans" are a cancer on the Superman fandom and the reason why the character is dying a slow death of irrelevancy, because you dumbasses are unable to let go of your childhood nostalgia and endlessly whine that everyone else have the same opinions as you.
