Hello my fellow /christians/

I have an athiest aquantance who believes that the only purpose of religion, especially Christianity, is to divide people and rally them for war/slaughter. Ironically, he is a soldier, as am I. Anyways, I know that atleast for Christianity, this is false. However, I find it dificult to explain this to him and I was hoping you guys could help me out. Apoligies in advance if this is a FAQ on this board as I am reletively new here.

Point out that anything that unites people also divides people. There can be no unity without division, there can be no in-group if there is no out-group. And in the 20th century secular ideologies were demonstrably proven to be far more lethal than religious ideologies. Communism divides the classes against each other and causes mass slaughter, and it is a thoroughly secular philosophy.

Most crusades were just wars. Eastern wars against mohammedanism were generally of a defensive nature.

Also the most atheistic empires in the history of humanity (Drittes Reich, Sowjet union) did concern themselves with nothing but aggressive expansion.

There's nothing behind the hypothesis. Its merely slander and hatred for Christ and his holy church.

In each period a war is waged for something. It is true that wars were fought in the past over religion. However only if one considers the "religion" to be a mere lie, then it makes no sense to wage a war.

I would point out however that in the material period - that is the period of the merchant - war is waged ONLY for material profit. The secondary slogans and justifications such as "humanism, defense of democracy and freedom" are added as propaganda so men go put their lives on the line. However today we hear of "wars over supperstitions" "only religions create wars"

Look at the world. Endless wars in the last 100 years. None of them was waged in the name of religion. They're all waged in the name of mammon, disguised as "defense of democracy and freedom".

Now the true question is what is actually "barbaric" - crusade in the name of God or middle eastern war in the name of oil money/foreign interests?

Endless slaughter over the last 100 years cannot be attributed to "religion" as cannot be the two world wars.Now thinka bout how many people died in those wars

The XXth century was the bloodiest one in history and yet pretty much all of the world powers throughout that century were secular states.

The only organisation that unites man from every part of the world regardless their race or country is the Catholic Church.

The only wars during those periods where the Catholic Church was strong were:

Not their fault they carried lethal bacteria they weren't immune to. Every other killing was due to the same reason the brits and the Americans killed the natives in the USA, that is not about religion.

Either way south America proves we were nice to them since most of them are Catholic and half breeds.

Now when the catholic Church lost its power on the states, 19th and 20th centuries, just the WW2 killed more people than all the wars together before.

And now wars are waged about everything, it doesn't matter the ones killed are innocent as long as the country has oil or Israel says they're bad.
