The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Vatican: Prohibit 'killer robots' now before too late…

“The Holy See has expressed its concerns on several occasions” about this deadly form of weapons system

ROME - Fully automated and autonomous lethal weapons systems must be banned now before they become a reality in tomorrow’s wars, a Vatican representative said. The development of robotic weapons or “killer robots” will provide “the capacity of altering irreversibly the nature of warfare, becoming more detached from human agency, putting in question the humanity of our societies,” Archbishop Ivan Jurkovic told a group of experts at the United Nations in Geneva. The archbishop, who is the Vatican observer to U.N. agencies in Geneva, spoke Nov. 22 at a meeting of the high contracting parties to the Convention on Prohibitions or Restrictions on the Use of Certain Conventional Weapons Which May Be Deemed to Be Excessively Injurious or to Have Indiscriminate Effects, held in Geneva Nov. 21-23. The Vatican mission in Geneva released the archbishop’s remarks Nov. 27.

“Various proposals for possible concrete outcomes have been put forward; what these proposals have in common is the underlying need for a multilateral approach and the need to retain the human person at the heart of decisions exerting injurious or lethal force,” he said. The Vatican advocates the attitudes of precaution and prevention as being “the only options that will ensure a sound and lasting outcome.” “In order to prevent an arms race and the increase of inequalities and instability, it is an imperative duty to act promptly: Now is the time to prevent LAWS from becoming the reality of tomorrow’s warfare,” he said.

I know anime is not the most well-liked subject on this board, but whenever I think about robots and religion I end up going to a few of them. Mainly, Astro Boy, The Phoenix, Ghost in the Shell and Big O. Of those, Big O and Ghost in the Shell aren't relevant to this.

Astro Boy and The Phoenix both focused on what it means for something to be alive. Osamu Tezuka once said the only things that a robot cannot imitate (at least, so far) are the brain and the nerves. However, I rarely ever hear a discussion about AI acting like a human instead of a machine. Whenever AI is involved, it always boils down to if they'll kill. I propose that it would be best to ask if robots are capable of Sin, or could be capable of understanding Sin. Or, possibly, if we eventually reach that point.

No one will care sadly.

I want to be killed by a man not by a winnie the pooh tincan.

Ghost in the Shell is probably my favorite exploration into the relationship between technology, religion, and what it means to be human. They have advanced AI that has emergent self-awareness (Tachikomas)

War…. has changed.

It's no longer about nations, ideologies, or ethnicity. It's an endless series of proxy battles, fought by mercenaries and machines.War–and it's consumption of life–has become a well-oiled machine.War has changed.ID-tagged soldiers carry ID-tagged weapons, use ID-tagged gear. Nanomachines inside their bodies enhance and regulate their abilities.Genetic control, information control, emotion control, battlefield control…everything is monitored and kept under control.War…has changed. The age of deterrence has become the age of control, all in the name of averting catastrophe from weapons of mass destruction, and he who controls the battlefield, controls history.War…has changed. When the battlefield is under total control, war becomes routine
