The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

I'm going to say this because it bugs the daylights out of me. Often time we hear Christians talking about going to church and how they love going to church and how they love their church and so on. This bothers me because it is using a good and proper Bible word in a bad and improper way. A church is not someplace you go, the church is something you are.

The word from which we get church comes from the Greek word ekklesia which is defined as an assembly. As Jesus and the other New Testament writers would use the word it implies a community or congregation of people with a shared belief.

I don't know at what point the idea of church being a place you go to over something you are but people, specifically those who are redeemed are the church. For it says that God "added to the church daily those who were being saved." (Acts 2:47b). So stop going to church. Be the church.

That did stuff together(break bread, prayer, etc.)

The church isn't a tulpa, mate.

Yes, you are correct that it isn't some figment of the imagination and one must gather somewhere with more than one person to be an assembly. My point is, however, people think that "Oh well I went to church so I'm good with God." But to be a member of the church of Christ, as in the church that Christ built, is to be a living stone and to carry the excellence of Christ with you wherever you go.

Perhaps it was a roundabout way of simply saying this: do more than just go somewhere on Sunday.

Only a prot would ever say “don’t go to church”. Yes, going because you feel like you have to and being bored the whole way through the service isn’t good, but that’s on YOU to change. The one time a week for most people to touch the divine, to be in the presence of God, to consume God himself, that’s worthy. Yes, live out Christ’s gospel, but also “consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” (Hebrews 10:24-25)

Don't just go to church, or something.

Referring to church as a destination doesn't discount the meaning off church you pedantic goof

"I'm going to Congress" works the same way

5 "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

I never felt comfortable in churches or any other building designed for prayer. I just stop somewhere safe and pray. That's my church.

Anon, there isn't a single christian before year 1000(Or possibly even to 1500/1800) that thinks not going to a physical church is normal.

How do you reconcile that with your beliefs?

Do Protestants have some sort of "extra ecclesia nulla salus" sort of tenet? In other words, is church attendance mandatory for them?

I go to church five times a week and you can't stop me.

We have Hebrews 10:25

25Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
