After ages of laughing along with my anti-religious father, I decided to lay it straight to him; I am a Christian who believes in God.
Of course my father didn't appreciate that, he started going on about how it is all silly and you would have to be stupid to believe in God.
I gave him really two arguments, the first being Aquinas' cause argument; there cannot be an infinite causal chain, there would have to be a first cause. This first cause would have to be necessary for existence (He would have to exist) or that this cause would spontaneously come into existence (which I said was illogical). The second argument I gave was that Atheism was hopeless. He brought up the classic atheist problem of evil. I replied saying that how is evil evil? Even if we concede that evil exists in the universe then Christianity gives an answer, future hope. Under Atheism the little child killed by Cancer fades to nothing, but under Christ there is the hope of resurrection. He replied to these arguments by saying that there was no God, that my arguments were (I quote directly)
"nonsense". He said I should just bother with fornicating with women, and "living my life" (I asked him what the hell that meant and of course he could provide no justification for those actions). What should I do?
