What does /christian/ think of the Ethiopian Jews/Beta Israel?
They claim they are descendants from the tribe of Dan that migrated to Ethiopia during the reign of King Solomon in Israel to accompany the Ark of the Covenant.
They are different from other Jews. They use a Ge'ez version of the Septuagint for their Bible and they even include books like the Book of Enoch in their canon.
They also still have Levitical priests (Kahen) who still conduct frequent sacrifices in their houses of worship called masgids.
They're also the only Jewish tradition to have monks, and monks and priests are considered to be the leaders of the Beta Israel community.
They also have some of their own unique celebrations and fast three times a week on Monday, Thursday, and Friday.
They reject the Talmud and most Rabbinical literature.
Interestingly, the Chief Rabbinate of Israel (the supreme Rabbinical authority for Jews in Israel and around the world) recognized their status as Jews and they were granted aliyah by the state of Israel and a huge population of them were evacuated to Israel in the 1980s after Islamic groups began targeting them in a civil war.
Within recent years, many of them have integrated into the wider Rabbinical Jewish community and have become mainstream Orthodox Jews. There are still some who keep their traditions though, despite many of these traditions being suppressed by the Rabbinical authority in Israel and abroad. They are seen as the underdogs of the Jewish community for many of their unique practices not sanctioned by mainstream Orthodox Judaism.
