The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

I still don't fully understand what Paul meant here:

>Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him,(1 Corinthians 11:14)

Is it the length of the hair itself that matters or the way we style it?

Personally I'm Orthodox and I'm looking to dedicate myself to a celibate life and not cut my hair and beard.

I'm not looking to let my hair grow as a symbol of vanity. (perhaps one day I will become a monk, I've been thinking about it) I just want to do it as an outward symbol of faith and modesty.

Is this a dishonor to me? Would God dislike this about me or would He condone it?

I had a clergyman tell me that Paul meant that for the battlefield because a man with long hair could be easily subdued and treated like a woman. I found that thought fascinating, but it is kinda why the military cuts off hair. It tends to get caught in things and requires upkeep to stop it from tangling up and such.

I don't think long hair on men is necessarily a bad thing unless you're a soldier, then it could bring you dishonor.

I have heard that the actual greek has connotations of hair that is beautified and adorned the way womenntake care of their hair. Can't vouch for that.

The only thing I'll be battling is sin tbh.

I'm pretty sure Paul himself took the nazarite vow. I know the vow nowadays doesn't exist, and its only remaining form is practiced by Orthodox clergymen and monks.

>>700450

This is what I heard as well, that the word used for hair, is not the anatomic word, but the one that expresses hair as a beautified thing or something.

Also, regarding length, I think this is also debatable because we can't really define what "long" is.

I still don't want to bring dishonor.

Personally my hair is longer than most women I know and my faith is just as strong as any short haired dude. I don't consider it a symbol of anything really, I just don't like cutting it. I do shave though, mostly because when I don't shave I have like five hairs on my chin that get really long and that's it. Luckily I have pretty broad shoulders and a deep voice, so no one thinks I'm trans or something besides this guy I knew in HS (when I stopped cutting my hair) that was the stereotypical soyboy to a T.

I don't think God really cares about hair length. Like >>700450 said, I'm pretty sure it's about pride/vanity. Even if it is a sin to have your hair long, it's been forgiven. So if you have no problem with it as a saved person, then that means it's fine imo.

Probably wasn't just about the hair but maybe it was a metaphor for greater things. In any case the Jewish custom would appear to have been shorter hair for males than females.

>>700449

There have been many warlike tribes sporting longer hair though, think of all of Rome's "barbarian" opponents and nomadic tribes. The modern practice probably has to do with achieving uniformity and cohesion and possibly reducing any waywardness in soldiers, called dehumanization by some.

I think what potentially creates a personal emotional conflict of conscience is the issue of being exposed constantly all one's life to the image of a long haired Jesus but seeing few church clergy and even lay people sport such a style.

From these frescos it appears that Israelites and royalty might be more given to longer hair but some Judeans could be depicted similarly as well. The Habbani tribe in Yemen was known for their long hair.

Short hair for men. No exceptions no cross dressing aka long hair.

Long hair for women.

That is good.

"Long" here means halfway down your back, not shoulder length.

The pantocrator icons look like the hair could end like a tail though. Was probably done to depict a majestic appearance.

This. People had longer hair back then, which makes sense it was probably harder to get a haircut.

What are we defining as long hair? I don't think my hair is too long but I've gotten conflicting opinions from others on this. I just try to keep it as a reasonable length.
