You can go the extra mile for those closest to you, like family and immediate neighbors, if you really want to. That's charity that is as real as any.
I see a lot of these money-based charities as corrupt institutions which seem to enable dysfunction more than to engender help to people in real need. The safest bet I've found is to give money only to people you can truly vet yourself. Giving money to people who abuse one's charity makes you complicit in their evil behavior, and that's something you definitely want to avoid.
