The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

So I struggle with a particular sin, that I do every day. I’ve tried quitting cold turkey, but I always just fall back after two or three days. I’ve made a plan so this time, instead of quitting cold turkey, I’ll try to ween myself off it. I made a schedule for myself, I’ll start by not doing it every Sunday, but still doing it the other six days a week. Then Sunday and Monday I’ll not do it, then Sunday Monday and Wednesday, then Sunday Monday Wednesday and Thursday, then I’ll add Saturday, Friday, then I’ll only be able to do it every ten days, then every two weeks, then maybe once a month, and eventually never again. After making this schedule, I thought that maybe that’s actually a sin, because I’m planning to sin on certain days. But is it wrong to ween myself? Do I have to quit cold turkey every time? This schedule seems like it will help me more, but I don’t want to seem like I’m just making excuses

Yes it should be cold turkey.

That is the definition of planning evil. You are planning to hurt God, on purpose, because it's "easier." Yes, it should be cold turkey each time, if you fall, you fall, make an act of contrition, make a resolution, and turn away from the sin. That is the way I have seen sins lessened in my life at least.

Yes, cold turkey is better, but I wouldn't consider what op is doing a sin. I'd just say that it's not as effective as going cold turkey. One could easily argue that if he already did it every day regardless, op isn't planning evil, but planning not to do evil.

But yes, op. You should be going cold turkey. It's way harder to quit any habitual sin slowly than just ripping off the band-aid in my experience. If it seems like it will help you then go ahead though. I'll pray for your success.

I don’t know if I agree with everyone else.

Wouldn’t going cold turkey, knowing it fails every time, be closer to sin than weening yourself off, if you’re sure that will lead you away from the habit?

(Also feel like this depends on what you’re doing too)

I can't stop fornicating. But it gives me something to repent about and ask for forgiveness and makes me realize how weak I am and in need of a saviour. If I didn't have this problem I'd be more liable to judge others and feel superior.

Now that you have this understanding of yourself you shouldn't have to fornicate

>Is weening yourself off sins a sin in of itself?

I don't know about "weening", but "weaning" isn't a terrible thing to do. It works especially well with drug or alcohol use. Cold turkey can actually kill you in some cases.

But weaning would imply that OP intends to commit some sin. Even if intentionally doing evil, offending God may - may - result in more good (which I doubt - it could instill some very dangerous mentality; besides, in for example masturbation, even one single sin always causes me to again fall into the habit which is very hard to again exit, even fir a day), it's still intentionally doing evil and offending against God.

Ends don't justify inherently evil means. They are still inherently evil, and you cannot intentionally do them without spitting in God's face (will to do them in future counts - sins are, after all, acts of will; e.g. if you shoot from a gun at somebody, trying to kill him, but you accidentally miss the target and he doesn't get hurt, you are still as guilty as if you succeeded - remember, sins are choices, and you are guilty of evil choices, no matter matter whether you succeed in carrying them out or not)
