The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Exactly how much of the Old Testament, specifically the Pentateuch, is non-literal and/or metaphorical? Where do we draw the line?

0f921a  No.690931

It's all literal. Of course, at the same time, we must interpret this through the revelations contained in the gospel, and we must also take into account what the author(s) meant based on the surrounding culture and expectations.

It sucks that we dont have Church and sacred tradition to have certain frames to interpret the scripture…oh wait…

The usual (((cultural differences))) scam for why you can't just believe the Bible.

You won't find him quoting scripture.

Hermeneutics, my friend, hermeneutics

Why not just take it at face value and accept it all happened exactly as written? I did that when I realized the only reason I was compromising by saying "G-genesis is metaphorical guys…" is because I was afraid of how other people would judge me. The I realized it literally makes no difference whether some fedora tipper bursts a vein because I'm "denying science", accepting the truth God gave to us is more important.

We all die anyway. Do you think it will make an once of difference whether you "accept science" when you're being judged by God? Will "This guy reconciled science with his faith" be carved into your tombstone? Why are you so concerned about making sure that other people know you think that the Bible is lying about creation? Is it for the glory of God or because you're afraid that people will think less of you?

Think about it

As Cathodox I never truly understood why do we accept the Ten Commandments but not the stuff on Leviticus as The Law / Moral Law.

ae8782  No.691264

Because moral law, summarized in ten commandments, is unchangeable. Moral law which was part of Old (Divine) Law, is the same moral law that was in New Law and Natural Law.

There are parts of Levticus that are Moral Law and not Ten Comandments, but fall under them.

Just read part of Summa about Moral Law. http://www.newadvent.org/summa/2100.htm

All the Bible is in addition to where it is literal, metaphorical for me. Each word of it I read as directly applying to me or a part of me in some way, and as a personal letter from the Father Himself. Many places it is in addition to this, literal, such as the Gospels mostly, a ton of the OT, etc. I am agnostic on whether Genesis is literal, the beginning of it, but I personally do not care, and I act most of the time as if it is literal, but with non-theist and such, I act as if it metaphorical. The exodus from Egypt is literal though, and other than some historical mistakes here and there, I don't see where any of the OT isn't literal.

Part of the reason I don't really accept it as literal (though most of the OT, I take actually, from Noah's ark onward, is literal to me except for historical mistakes here and there, and blatant exaggerations) is because I can plainly see with my own two eyes that the world does not look as described there. The firmament has been pierced many times by man now, and no water came flooding in. That alone makes me not take it literally, but despite that, I do often act as if it is. It makes it richer for me I suppose.
