That's because the greek word is porneia, plus some others. Literally this meant prostitution, but more generally it meant any form of sexual immorality, including having sex with slaves, which wasn't technically fornication or adultery. So no this is now harsher if anything else.

Some people (many people) honestly think fornication is not immoral. And in fact the word moral has its root in the Latin moralis, which means custom or manner. So "immoral" strictly speaking means "not according to the customs" or not proper manners according to society. It's a slippery vague word that can be expanded or contracted to numerous things. Not to be confused with the specific definition used in scripture. Also your attempt to redefine the word is noted. People are constantly attacking and redefining words that used to mean very specific things.

I actually like using sexual immorality better. Translating every sexual sin to mean sex outside of marriage regardless of context was a terrible mistake. It was one of the big changes I made in my custom Rheims but I used sexual impurity instead.

FYI - etymology does not determine definition. Just because a word evolved from another word does not mean that the latter word’s meaning is the meaning of the former word. Does that make sense?

I’ll just say that there are a lot of problems with modern translations. These problems are reflective of the plague of denominationalism. You see, Christ gives us the Church, and in turn, the Church gives us the Bible. Now, half a millennium has passed since the Deformation and there is no real Church authority for many who claim to follow Christ, therefore there is no truly definitive bible translation that is agreed upon. This is one of the many reasons I love the Douay Rheims bible. I also think that the RSV is reliable, sound and true translation.
