The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Assuming the trend of God punishing nations for disobedience by having them overrun by foreign hordes continued after Jesus, what did the Byzantine Empire do wrong?

Apostatize

ff2287 No.674505

Meh, I got bored for a while in church so I was reading the article in this year's calendar book that was about this subject. Byzantium at the time was really degenerate. Priests were corrupted, they didn't care about chastity, took money for sacraments and so on. Emperor spent most of the money traveling in Orthodox Europe from Serbia to Georgia to find a bride and wasted massive part of state funds on this. The list goes on.

Also this.

>But oh, I see that by speaking in this manner of all in general, I am missing my point. So let us apply this truth to various states, and you will understand that you must either throw away reason, experience and the common sense of the faithful, or confess that the greater number of Catholics is damned. Is there any state in the world more favorable to innocence in which salvation seems easier and of which people have a higher idea than that of priests, the lieutenants of God? At first glance, who would not think that most of them are not only good but even perfect; yet I am horror-struck when I hear Saint Jerome declaring that although the world is full of priests, barely one in a hundred is living in a manner in conformity with state; when I hear a servant of God attesting that he has learned by revelation that the number of priests who fall into hell each day is so great that it seemed impossible to him that there be any left on earth; when I hear Saint Chrysostom exclaiming with tears in his eyes, "I do not believe that many priests are saved; I believe the contrary, that the number of those who are damned is greater." -St. Leonard of Port Maurice

What's hilarious is that this is exactly the argument bishops had after Constantinople fell - the city was punished for apostatizing by accepting the decrees of Florence.

>Schism happen

>few decades later Byzantines are annihilated at Manzikert and lose the entire area of today's Turkey

>only regain parts of it by asking help to the west (1st Crusade)

>keep being in Schism

>massacre latin

>despite being condemned by the Pope, the 4th crusade end up sacking Constantinople due to various events

>Byzantines reclaim Constantinople but never fully recover

Yeah, as you can see the disaster totally started because of the Council of Florence.

Manzikert totally didn't happen less than 20 years after the schism.

Funny, Catholics actually stopped the muslim invasions. Really heats up the almonds.

>stopped them at Tours/Poiters

>gave reliefs to the Byzantines with the first Crusade

>actually reclaim some of the lands that were christian and roman before the arab invasion

>beat the ottomans at their peak at Lepanto

>repeal their last invasion at Vienna

Unfortunately in the coming decades western Europe will probably fall to the muslims because of its sins and godlessness. The Catholic church is plagued by ambiguity, weakness and heterodoxy and is no longer a strong defense like in the past.

God's justice hit the east, it will now hit the west.

True, which is why we Christians in the West, no matter Catholic or Orthodox, must stick together when it happens. It happened before, but this time we’ll be ready.

I'm not saying that Florence helped or didn't help. The city was doomed anyway.

But let me address a few things while I'm at it:

>Schism happen

It's not a schism strictly speaking if eucharistic communion is kept. And eucharistic communion was kept until 1204 since Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem kept communion with both Rome and Constantinople. If by "schism" you have in mind the "Great Schism", modern scholars pretty much all agree that 1204 is a better date.

>massacre latin

And the Latins paid it back with the sack of Thessalonica a few years later.

>despite being condemned by the Pope, the 4th crusade end up sacking Constantinople due to various events

"Condemned" by the Pope? Did the reductio Graecorum vanish from your memory?

>The rest of the Sees fell while in communion with Rome, and Constantinople fell with a uniate bishop at it's helm.

Seeing history through a narrative is retarded.

>>674596

>beat the ottomans at their peak at Lepanto

Cherrypicking.

The Fourth Ottoman–Venetian War as a whole was an ottoman victory.
