The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

TL;DR - How do I venerate saints?

Hello lads, I need some help. I am a protestant but in the past few years have come over, at least on an intellectual level to the Catholic position (or apostolic in general). Some recent events have caused me to really consider the Catholic faith more seriously. But there are still some things which niggle me on an emotional level. One of these is saintly veneration. From the TL;DR you would be forgiven for thinking I was asking the procedures, though these are easily read. But what I am a wanting to know is how do I accept this on an emotional level? It feels very alien to my very being.

You ask for their help the same way you ask your friends for help. Simple, really.

It is not neccessary to venerate saints.

Some people just find it easier or more proper.

2) That's the beauty of God - it doesn't matter what you think or feel. Truth is Truth even if you "don't feel like it" (or rather: have a hard time accepting it).

The solution really is: If you agree with Catholic (i.e., OG Christian) Dogma then you just suck up your doubts and discuss them with a priest. It's really that uncomplicated.

I'm a little… friendly in my speech to my mates. Except my religious mates. Maybe I need more religious mates.

I have not spoken to a Catholic at all about this, except on this board. I go to a Catholic church during the week but sit in the back without interaction (except for the sign of peace). Ponder the phrase "protanon goes to a Catholic Church where he knows nobody" and you will imagine me.

I should contact the local Catholic people but sometimes I find it easier to talk to people here. I've been in here too long I guess…

Well sure talk to local faithful. But if you want to convert - and agree with basically everything besides having problems accepting them - then you go to a priest. The laity can only help you so much, the priest is trained in pastoral work and dealing exactly with things like that.

Then let me ask you something: how do you venerate?

Do you think a saint is going to be offended if you earnestly ask him or her to pray for you, even if your speech is a little crass? People like Saint Alphonsus Liguri spent plenty of time around the poor and simple. Think of a saint as someone who, via their Heavenly vantage, knows your heart and your faults, but nonetheless wants the best for you.
