The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

I'm through the Old Testament for the first time and, after skimming through 1st and 2nd Chronicles, it just seems to be telling the same events as Samuel and Kings, except for the very end of 2nd Chronicles. Is it okay to skip to the beginning of Zedekiah's reign?

Pic unrelated.

No. Read the whole Bible. Skip nothing, even the genealogies which are actually very important.

No. Try reading some of the Wisdom or Prophets if you can't go straight from 4 Kingdoms (2 Kings) to 1 Chronicles. That's what I ended up doing on my full reading of the Bible.

Could you explain why? I don't doubt that you're right, but I have no idea what I should be looking for in terms of meaning. My eyes just end up glazing over and by the end it's like I never read them at all.

1&2 Chronicles actually tell untold stories about David, Salomon and Kings of Judah.

But first nine chapter really are eye sore for they are basically strings of names. But they are not that bad if you:

>Fallows the lines of David (Christ) and Aaron (John the Baptist)

>In 3:1-9 (and in 2 Chron 11:18) there are sons of David, whose names are prophetic

>There is nice prayer in 4:10

Also, you can read it alongside some commentary, such as Haydock's

Skip it temporarely, on first reading. Forcing yourself may make you distracted to what is important and bored.

Return to it later, though.

Samuel+Kings are written according to the ideology of the preexilic prophetic schools. Chronicles are written according to the ideology of the postexilic priests. While the events are the same, the content is very different. Samuel+King correspond more closely to the actual historical events, while Chronicles shows the way postexilic people imagined and expounded the glory and the disgrace of the past. In Samuel+King one has to be loyal to God. In Chronicles one has to observe the Law of God.

I'd say skip the genealogies if you want, you can return later when you know better. Don't be bothered by things you don't understand, unless you want to become like are Krishna monk reading his mantra or like a muslim chanting the Kuran in Arabic while not knowing Arabic.
