Samuel+Kings are written according to the ideology of the preexilic prophetic schools. Chronicles are written according to the ideology of the postexilic priests. While the events are the same, the content is very different. Samuel+King correspond more closely to the actual historical events, while Chronicles shows the way postexilic people imagined and expounded the glory and the disgrace of the past. In Samuel+King one has to be loyal to God. In Chronicles one has to observe the Law of God.

I'd say skip the genealogies if you want, you can return later when you know better. Don't be bothered by things you don't understand, unless you want to become like are Krishna monk reading his mantra or like a muslim chanting the Kuran in Arabic while not knowing Arabic.
