depends what you view as monasticism. Monasticism should be according to words "be in the world but not of the world". Even in ancient times, even the most strict of ascetics were having contacts with others, would preach and give advices and so on. Now some are turning too isolationist.

Seraphim rose wrote some good stuff and some garbage, especially regarding toll house archon trash. And his talk (or general LARPish tone in his works) about "only good government form is autocratic empire" at that point I didnt knew if it was written by a monk or 40k fan.
