Found a strange blog that seems to be attacking all things Orthodox, particularly monasticism as a result of the suicide of a young monk. They have discredited Seraphim Rose and said he was a leader of a cult lol. They are even attempting to (((scientifically))) debunk certain miracles. http://archive.is/IdMmc

Most of the Church Fathers did just that. The fact that a thing is thought to be a part of the orthodox culture means nothing. Being orthodox myself, when I talk to people from my parish I somethimes wonder whether those people are joking with. Some of them do not believe in the Holy Trinity, some believe that some special icons can make their husbands quit drinking, all are constantly looking for spiritual fathers with magic powers and looking for miracles, holy icons, holy bones. They thing sacraments are magic. All in all, I sometimes think that I an in some weird cult. And many parishes are basically totalitarian cults especially if they have charismatic priests. One should always remember what Apostle Paul said about traditions and even law (Phil 3:8). Fun thing is that in the NKJV the Greek word σκύβαλον is translated as 'rubbish' while even the Vulgata has it right 'stercus' which means shit or crap. Yes saint Paul calls Jewish law he was raised in - shit. I thing that is a good practice. If it is not in the Creed I may call it shit.

depends what you view as monasticism. Monasticism should be according to words "be in the world but not of the world". Even in ancient times, even the most strict of ascetics were having contacts with others, would preach and give advices and so on. Now some are turning too isolationist.

Seraphim rose wrote some good stuff and some garbage, especially regarding toll house archon trash. And his talk (or general LARPish tone in his works) about "only good government form is autocratic empire" at that point I didnt knew if it was written by a monk or 40k fan. And yes, given how rose's fanboys act, he definitely has a cult.

I was hoping the grass was greener somewhere else. I guess you can take some consolation in the fact that even though you have charismatic nutbags, at least you might have charisma.
