The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

For those of you, either Catholics or Protestants, that know the congregationalist movement of the Church of Christ, how much do they incorporate the OT into their theology?

f58a87 No.652248

My grandfather is a Church of Christ elder (their equivalent of a Bishop/Pastor, for lack of a better word) and my mom was raised Church of Christ, obviously. I was exposed to it a lot growing up. In short: not very much. One thing I noticed with Church of Christ is that the OT is mentioned insofar as wrapping up a sermon. Like, if there is a sermon on why being gay is bad, they'll pull from Leviticus, which is cool, but that's the extent of it, really. I remember my granddad hosting Bible study about Job once, but beyond Sunday school they didn't talk about the OT much, and almost never in terms of theology. I've heard homilies and sermons from other denominations that go into how there was buildup to the coming of Christ in the OT, and how understanding the OT can help us understand the NT and the coming of Christ, but that was never talked about in the Church of Christ my grandfather runs. Then again, I've only been to about 70 or so sermons there, since my mom left Church of Christ and we only went for big holidays when visiting family.

I grew up in the Church of Christ. Each one is completely independent from all the others so it's a difficult to define them as a denomination as there are many theological differences between the various congregations. They are a denomination of debaters and constantly argue among themselves about what the scriptures mean (as well as with other denoms especially the baptists). From my personal experience, most of the CoC have a supressionist or abolishonist theology concerning the Old Testament, that is, it's just history and the New Testament is what really counts when it comes to religion. They really only use the OT to give cultural and historical background to the NT.

For a long time I didn't understand why Christ dying on the cross saved humanity from our sins because I didn't know that the Israelites made blood sacrifices to God in the OT.

Interesting, as I see, they do base themselves almost completely on the NT. Is it still a good denomination if you study the OT by yourself? It's pretty conservative unlike most Protestant denominations that fell for faggotry to get people in and it doesn't take rites that would be invalid in Protestantism (e.g. transubstantiation - not possible due to lack of apostolic sucession, therefore taken as symbolic).

It's also not dying

In the CoC, you can believe just about anything you want as long as it doesn't directly contradict (a very basic interpretation of) scripture. But I disagree on that it's conservative. Particular congregations may be conservative but like I said before, each congregation is completely independent from each other. I used to attend service at a rather large CoC until the preacher said, and I quote "We must change the church to adapt to the changing times" And that put the last nail in the coffin for me. But overall, I don't think the CoC is bad, it's probably one of the best prot denoms out there.

The only denomination worth joining is Catholicism

It seems that in this denomination if you don't ever get baptized you do go to Hell. Since they're not quite Sola Fide.

DAB ON DEM SINNERS

I wonder if I should choose Church of Christ or SDA….or Catholicism. If you wonder why SDA, it would be because even if it has its strange mistakes about the Second Coming, it follows the Bible pretty well.

I'm going to piss a lot of people off in this board for saying this, but the Church of Christ just seems to be too white for me being Mexican and being used to Mass. You'll see what I mean when you see the video.

I like Protestant denominations that have a bit of formality, but since there's variation in every CoC and because they believe there's necessary steps to heaven, their theology is flawed even according to Prot standards.

Apparently salvation is not by faith alone but by faith and works, and baptism is a pre-requisite. For protestant standards, this is not 'protestant'

CoC seems more of a meme than SDA at this point, tbh

70 sermons is still a lot of time for such an emphasis on the NT and almost no attention on the OT.
