The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Fellow /Christians/

I was wondering if the use/abuse of the above named counts as sins of the flesh, or is sinful in any other way.

I have, mostly because of loneliness, a bit of a problem with substance abuse, mainly alcohol, but I have a history with other drugs too, I was addicted to strong opiates for 6 years. And I also smoke tobacco daily, although only a couple of cigarettes a day, I find it hard to quit.

On alcohol, I seem to remember Scripture at one points say that wine makes the hearts of men merry, and the fact that Our Lord chose it as the symbol for His blood I assume moderate use of wine is not a sin, but He also says drunkards will not reach Heaven. I drink a bit too much and this worries me. Where is the line drawn?

As for drugs, I assume most fall under pharmakeia? Or is that only when it is specifically being used for divining purposes?

For example, a kid taking Adderall, which is amphetamine? Of course I can see why amphetamines open doors to the demonic, they also make you very likely to masturbate, sinning against the 6th.

I'd say when it starts to affect you health, worklife and/or social life, as that would mean you damage your body, succumb to sloth and loose compassion to others

And obviously when you actually become addicted, as that would mean you've made yourself a slave to alc.

On a side note, what's the Christian position on Ibogaine? It's considered as an anti-drug and there's been reports of people recovering from addiction as short as a day. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17023388

However, to use this substance, one must undergo a brutal trance with their "inner-self" and experience unforgiving leg pains.

Pharmakeia.

I am in favor of proper use of Amphetamines because they helped me before tremendously; though it is an incredibly dangerous drug, it has fairly simple and well understood pharmacology which allows for it to actually be used as medicine.

On the other hand the pharmacology of Ibogaine makes it seem like brain poison. It doesn't work in a precise manner it effects a wide range of neurotransmitters. Yeah it would produce a lot of effects that are purported, but I don't see how it can be controlled medicinally. I don't see a way to quantify dosing to get a certain medicinal effect because of how quickly neurotransmitter metabolisms alter themselves. You could take a dose and have an effect that seems like a wonder medicine and then have it be ineffective next dose or get sick/die after increasing the dose to seek the same effect. This is the kind of thing that fries people's brains and it seems to usually be done in the typical gay vague shamanistic manner; accompanied by the whole "wow dude life is amazing ibogaine SAVED me dude it changed my life" which to me just screams that it's severely winnie the pooh with neurotransmitters and shouldn't be interacted with lightly.

Remember OP, your body is a temple for the Holy Spirit to reside in.

>19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

>20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

>1Corinthians chapter 6

So taking and abusing drugs harms your body, thus desecrating your temple for the Holy Spirit. That and it is a distraction as it takes your mind off of God. You become a slave to your passion (lust).

If you can quit any of those things cold turkey without a problem than you're probably fine. If you struggle to stop than you are abusing the substance and should rid yourself of it.

Alcohol is not a sin to use, but it is a sin to abuse (sin of drunkenness)

Tobacco damages the temple of God and can be seen as a sin.

Drugs damage the temple of God, but they also set you into an altered state which opens you up to demonic suggestion and can make it harder to tel if you're sinning or not since you're not totally with it.
