Is it wrong for to read the "holy" texts of other religions as fiction? I kind of want to read the Rig Veda because it's supposed to have insane, borderline mecha anime stories in it.

It's ok. Back in time hinduism was a very advanced religion/philosophy. The concept of atman/brahman/supreme soul could be divinely inspired. Also you can see hints of a trinity, but never fully developed in that sense.

What we see right now are a collection of superstitions of a 10000 year old civilization. It's difficult to have respect for present day hinduism.
