When is a war holy? When is it just to wage war or defend yourself? My background is Assyrian, but my family is from Lebanon. My family friend told me stories of the Lebanese Civil War, and as a child, he was at church on Easter Sunday when the Muslim jihadis attacked. He saw children's clothing fly into the air torn from their bloody exploded corpses, while houses collapsed and the Muslims screamed 'allahu ackbar'.

In vengeance, his father grabbed an old form of machine gun and took a position in an abandoned apartment. He then slaughtered 98 Muslims to prevent them from reaching the village. His father then rescued a boy who had hidden under the floorboards of his home. When the Muslims came and killed his entire family, he survived and my friend's father rescued him. Together they killed even more Muslims.

My question is, was this right? We're the Christians right to wage holy war against their Muslim attackers? In Europe, a lot of you have complained about Islamization. That wouldn't happen if Europeans acted like the Lebanese did. Any thoughts?

All war is the result of sin. Some can have positive effects that make it necessary. There's a lot in the western tradition on this, look up Just War Theory

It is not a sin to fight for what is right. There are some people that words will not reach.

Just war theory is what you're looking for >>626361 is right.

This. There's rules and mostly in self defense but it can be just under the circumstances. You Assyrians know this well

I should also say this is a challenging area of study. If you read early Bonhoeffer, he's very pacifist, but he also worked for the German resistance and was martyred. You might read his Cost of Discipleship as well.

My personal opinion is that those that do declare holy war are sacrificing their own purity and voluntarily sinning..this means that they should know to repent, and know that they disappoint the Lord with their violence. Being violent when thinking it's a good thing is easy, but being violent when you know it's wrong is a sacrifice of your own purity and morality in order to protect others. thats my two cent

If a criminal breaks into your house with the intention of killing you then I presume it would be more sinful to bend over and submit instead of running away or retaliating. Turning the other cheek doesn't mean submission, it means being slow to anger and taking no part in vengeance.

◄ Romans 12:19 ►

Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, "VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY," says the Lord.

>All war is the result of sin.

False

>When is it just to wage war or defend yourself?

The answer is in your question.

Defending yourself is always just.

Defending those you love is just too.

And yes, the old man did right.

If they come to take you out, to kill you out of religious fanaticism, their salvation can only be a distant hope anyway. Save yourself, save your own people in the face of evil and pray that God will have mercy upon all.

Thank you for this guys. it makes a lot of sense. i hear from some that total pacifism is Christian, but I disagree. Christ was not a pacifist to evil, and tolerance of evil is evil itself

To be holy means to be set apart from the profane world and dedicated to God. War by its nature is a violent engagement against an enemy. War is inherently of this world. That doesn't mean it's wrong. You might as well talk about "holy politics" or "holy grocery shopping" or "holy parasailing." You can fight a war in defence of the religion, but that doesn't make the war holy. You're keeping the enemy out of the sanctuary, not fighting them in the sanctuary.
