The Orthodox Church is not the "sister church" of the Catholic Church.
However, the Church of Constantinople is the sister church of the Church of Rome.
Belonging to the Church of Rome will not help you very much since it's in schism. To quote my priest, "The Catholic Church can pastor, but doesn't have the ressources to." You can be saved in the Catholic Church but it's safer to be in the Orthodox Church.
Being baptized/confirmed as a Catholic is a grave matter if you plan to be Orthodox later. You'll violate your vows made at baptism and confirmation, plus you'll need to be confirmed in the Orthodox Church and formally renounce heresies. In my opinion you should belong to a Catholic community without getting baptized/confirmed there, until you can join an Orthodox parish.

> If I end up dying before living in a place with an Orthodox Church, would I not be saved due to not taking part in the Sacraments?
That's not how salvation works. God isn't a vending machine, where you put in "faith & works & sacraments in the right communion" and get "salvation."

This is silly. Focus on the actual doctrinal differences that separate us, not on something pastoral like what is and isn't a sin and to what degree.
Orthodox do believe that contraception is a grave sin. Non-abortifacient contraception can temporarily be permitted if for some reason abstinence is not possible, and that's the principle of economy, but it's not because we're not as strict as the Catholics that you'll be allowed to do it.
