Most people have one side of the body dominant over the other, so if you're going somewhere unknown you have a tendency to move in an arch pattern towards you're dominant side. Over long distances this creates a large circle and you just wander around thinking you're moving in a straight line.

Second of all, them walking took like month. Rest was ethier camping or being punished for 38 years.
