not looking to argue, just wondering, what's the reasoning/difference

i get that a lot of people find Joseph Smith's story hard to believe, but there's nothing in the Mormon scripture that really goes against the original Testaments

>i get that a lot of people find Joseph Smith's story hard to believe, but there's nothing in the Mormon scripture that really goes against the original Testaments

Now I can't really give verses from Mormon scripture, and correct me if I'm wrong. But it is to our belief that you do not acknowledge the Trinity to its fullest. I think you do acknowledge the Godhead but you seem to have the belief that Christ is of the same level as Satan. As opposed to being God and equal to the Father.

The former is probably the biggest reason you;re not considered Christian. Though our denominations on this board argue and what not, we all believe in the same God. We all agree on the divinity of Christ and the Trinity. If you do not agree with this, then you are not a Christian.

Another big issue we have is the idea that we can become like God. The whole idea of perfecting yourself and becoming like your Heavly parents are all that jazz. I may not be grasping it fully, and you may want to elaborate. But the whole idea is very anti-Christian.

How about the part where you can become a God and produce spirit children through endless celestial sex?

No, Mormonism is more like Christian fanfiction. They don't believe the Nicene Creed. On an even more basic level, they deny the two most fundamental truths of the Christian faith: the Trinity and the Incarnation. The Trinity they deny by stating that God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are three distinct beings. The Incarnation they deny by stating that, while Jesus is divine, he is not God.

Mormon cosmology is also very different than Christian coamology in that it fails to distinguish between the created and uncreated. Because of a denial of creation ex nihilo, they see it as possible for man to become God, something that is impossible in Christian theology because of God's uncreated nature. In fact, this places Mormons closer to pagans, since pagans had stories of mortals that ascended to some form of godhood, the same thing that Mormons claim will happen to those deserving of the highest reward at the final judgement.

it's not as much about becoming Godlike as it is being pure/devout enough that you truly are in God's image

That's just not true, or at least not in mainstream Mormon thinking. You're trying to equate acquiring divine essence (becoming a new god) with acquiring divine energy (Orthodox theosis, or something like it, through the grace of the Holy Spirit).

The website you link has a ton of Scriptural/Church father backing for theosis – which, speaking as an Orthodox Christian, makes sense. But there's zero expounding on the essence/energy distinction because it's at this point that the Mormon interpretation strays into non-Christian territory. No quotes from Palamas or other Orthodox thinkers. It's noteworthy that there are zero uses of the word energy, and the only mention of essence is in a quote from Origen:

>Every one who participates in anything, is unquestionably of one essence and nature with him who is partaker of the same thing.

I don't think I need to explain why we shouldn't trust Origen's high theology.

But I digress. You said you're not here to argue so I don't mean to hound you on the problems with Mormonism.

12351f No.608110

i feel like someone could follow Mormon scripture and most ideals and still be considered Christian depending on their interpretation

Religion isn't your relationship with the church so much as with the Lord

Is it really? I thought trying to be like God was the Christian approach to better understanding him, empathising with him and internalising his values.

It's quite simple, to be able to call yourself a Christian you must follow the Nicene creed. If your church does not follow it then you're not a member of a Christian church. Still mad about the Arians

We are to emulate Christ as closely as possible, but I was meaning more in the sense of becoming a God yourself.

Like the other guy said, I think it's because you all have a view other than Trinitarian theology, which is, by definition, against the Nicene Creed.

This is rule three of the board, too, which is why it's unlikely to see the Mormons here and rather easy to find them on their own containment board. I think it's >>>/lds/ or something like that

NO

Mormons are worse than New Age retards, at least they know they're not Christian.

>>608085

>but there's nothing in the Mormon scripture that really goes against the original Testaments

"Another testimony of Jesus Christ" how about he part where he changed the bible https://rsc.byu.edu/archived/joseph-smith-prophet-and-seer/joseph-smiths-new-translation-bible-1830

This is why everyone thinks so low of Christians, it's the same reason why so many fall for false religions/cults so easily, because everything thinks we believe anything we're told, and because of people don't at least try to confirm what they're worshiping reading.

>>608110

>i feel like someone could follow Mormon scripture and most ideals and still be considered Christian depending on their interpretation

That really doesn't mean anything, since someone who only goes to church on Sunday and sins all week long could be considered a Christian by another useful idiot.
