not christian but i'm not retarded either, i realize that the west is built on christian values.

i am curious though, if jesus was the new testament, who gave everyone the old testament, and why do christians pay attention to the old testament if jesus wanted you to follow the new one? also, why is there more than one church? why don't all christians just do what the new testament says and leave it at that?

reading over this again it kinda sounds like bait.

i'm genuinely curious, these are things i've just never known about.

it's not supposed to be "haha christfags BTFO!", i'm sure there's a reason why, but IDK so i'm asking.

People these days become atheists before even reading the Bible.

god inspired the prophets that made the old testament. its kept in the bible because a number of prophecies were fulfilled with jesus' first coming (he was the messiah tbh, so if you don't have the proofs that started the argument then you're wasting your time). there's a lot of different churches because we're human and we really suck at following rules because of original sin and all that stuff.

This is a board for Christian fellowship. You should already be a professing Christian when you post here, or on the way there. Basic questions like this, trolling or not, pollute the board and could easily be google'd.

Christ quotes the old testament time and time again, fulfills countless old testament prophecies, and explicitly says that the new testament does not discard the old, but fulfills it. The same God made the first covenant as made the second.

>reading over this again it kinda sounds like bait.

DEFINITELY sounds like bait, but, let's go and assume it's not …

>why do christians pay attention to the old testament if jesus wanted you to follow the new one?

It' not an either/or. Christ is the God of both. God's character does not change, but the incarnation of Christ is a greater revelation. The OT laws were designed to show us that Law will not save, for no one can perfectly obey the law which is what God would require, therefore a sacrifice would be required – Christ Himself. The new life that the NT preaches is as a consequence of our being freed from Law while still being bound by goodness embodied in God's character. So, we now don't murder because God says "Do not murder", but because we understand who God is and understand that murder is just plain wrong, inconsistent with who God is, and who He made us to be.

Kinda make sense?

>also, why is there more than one church?

There isn't. I understand you meant "denominations", but it's instructive to point out that God's Church is still one, it just happens to have different hierarchies on earth because we're still horribly fallible humans prone to divisions and schisms.

If you are trying to understand the history of that, feel free to review Wikipedia or rafb.

>why don't all christians just do what the new testament says and leave it at that?

W-w-we do for the most part, but refer answer 1 for more detail. The OT still tells us so much about the character of God and the nature of our faith. Plus, the NT refers to it a lot. (Pic related.) It is indispensable. Plus it has gnarly prayers to God in Psalms that we can use as p&w songs.

More than all this:

>not christian but i'm not retarded either, i realize that the west is built on christian values.

BEGOME

It's time you did more than simply sit on the sidelines and think that Christianity is pretty cool guy an' all, but you yourself embrace Christ as your own. Not because civilisation, but because it is truth. Civilisations come and go, and may well be that this one is on its last legs, but God will be forevermore, and no rock built by man can ever outlast Him.

Just sayin'

Scripture, or any book for that matter is easily misinterpreted without context. The OT gives us historical and cultural context to what Christ is saying. He constantly alludes to the OT, if you don't know the OT, how do you know what he is alluding to and why?

Also, all scripture is divinely inspired. I.e. a study will lead you closer to the nature of God even if it isn't perfectly historically accurate or uses metaphor, it leads you to "Truth" in its most complete sense.

>who gave everyone the old testament

Jesus, through the prophets of Israel.

>why do christians pay attention to the old testament if jesus wanted you to follow the new one?

Because it was given by Jesus too, and directs us to Jesus.

>why is there more than one church?

There is one Church, and then there are many schisms and heresies.

>why don't all christians just do what the new testament says and leave it at that?

Because Christians don't agree on what the New Testament says to begin with.

Paul's epistle to the Romans is a good example. Catholics/Orthodox and Protestants interpret it in radically different ways. Paul talks about faith and works, with faith saving us and works being useless. Does he mean that we are saved by an active faith in Christ rather than by the works of the Mosaic Law, or does he mean that any and all works are useless to justify us and we must rely on faith alone?

Or Matthew 16:16-19. Who is the "rock"? Is it Jesus Himself, is it everyone who confesses Jesus as Son of God, is it the confession of Peter, or is it Peter himself? If it is Peter, what does this mean concerning the current Church - is his special office of "rock" (ie, authoritative interpreter and teacher of the faith) given to the Pope, or is it given to all bishops?

These are just some examples.
