I think Mel is more concerned about his conviction to his faith rather than the denomination. Somebody saw him getting the penance sacrament in a roman catholic church a few years ago. He also has dated a bunch of young girls after his divorce. I think it's not weird for a man with a huge amount of fortune such as Mel to have an internal struggle of faith.

See, for us it seems less offensive for only the leaders to say it. However, from the rabbinical Jewish standpoint, the Sanhedrin saying it binds their whole race. Therefore, from the Jewish perspective, the move makes it more anti-semetic.
