I think it's fine to celebrate it (though I personally am waiting for the weekend as Ash Wednesday is today). I don't see any harm in it as long as you don't allow it to become a lust fest. Just take your girl out to a nice dinner or on a picnic, get her some flowers or chocolate or something, and be sweet. If you're single, treat yourself to a nice meal at a place you normally would think is a bit expensive.

Strange. People do not really celebrate Valentines THAT MUCH in Japan contrary to what most people are led to believe (hyper chocolate sales day, etc.). In reality, it is just a chocolate giving festival amongst the girls (it is even jokingly called Galentine there). They do not really like to waste money if they can help it though. At most the cost would roughly be about 1,000 yen or about $10 max.

At least chocolate is delicious though.
