People need to stop worrying about if the entertainment they watch is "sinful", first the vvitch thread and now this. Now, I get it if it's some obviously satanic or mindless thing but a great and nuanced show like True Detective or a movie The VVitch is not sinful.
In movies and television, when a character says or does something, don't take it at face value. Rust in this series represents the "rational" and pessimistic mind, while Marty represents the faithful and optimistic mind. Just look at their names, Rustin Cohle sounds like "Rusty Coal" while "Marty Hart" has "heart" in his name. Rust is a loner and a broken soul, and Marty is a christian family man. Despite being an outwardly depressing guy, Rust is content while Marty is screwing his whole family up. Despite being this rational atheist guy, Rust has borderline psychic abilities and Marty, despite being a christian is horribly mundane. Don't forget the ending, where Rust basically sees his daughter in the afterlife. There is much more going on here than Rust simply being a mouthpiece for the writers atheism. They are both representations of themes and nuanced believable characters at the same time.
The atheism of Rust is just there to make one of many points. The main theme of the series is satanic ritual abuse and it's effect on what Rust calls the "psychosphere" in the first episode. He says it "tastes like aluminium and ash" and in the present day interviews he is drinking beer from cans and smoking, alimunium and ash. Marty's daughter is also affected by the tainted psychosphere, that's why they make a big deal out of her drawing sexual stuff and arranging her dolls like the pedos in the video. The whole point is that the satanic abuse is affecting the psychosphere and society at large, which is why Marty's family breaks apart. It is absolutely portraying satanism in a negative light, so how can that be sinful? There's probably more to it, but that's what I got so far.

"pedogate" has been a thing since the 70's at the very least, it's not like it's some new revelation.
