I’ve been an atheist for years now but I’m not sure why I think that this is the only possible way for things to be. I’ve never had many friends, certainly never any women interested in me, and I’m the odd one out for relatives. I have frequent panic attacks/existential crisis ever since I was going about the impending oblivion that awaits me, and they’ve only gotten stronger in intensity and longer in duration as I’ve gotten older (I’m nearly 22 now and this one has lasted 7 months.) My family is religious l, but I can’t help but think it’s a coping mechanism (which of course renders it unusable for me.) I looked into stoicism and how death is indistinguishable from napping (in that you cannot experience unconsciousness and do not dream when you nap) but despite trying to logically whittle down this dread, it remains. I started looking into NDE’s but the experiment run to prove their veracity was considered a total failure.

>atheist

why?why not agnostic?

in your atheistic views what doyou think happens after life?

aa3a47 No.598832

Incomprehensible nothingness/annihilation of the self. Not that I would know if it happened because I wouldn’t exist, but the me that currently exists does and that’s where the dread comes from.

I feel like agnosticism is being disingenuous if I leave it at that and don’t seek to find a more specific answer.

Aquinas made 5 arguments for the existence of God so you can use those to convince yourself of a higher power. I’m not sure how to prove an afterlife other than Jesus’ word but we have historical records other than the Bible and he did perform miracles so I guess he has some credibility. Of course, if their logic is flawless it doesn’t even matter if your fear of oblivion is stronger than your faith. The way I see it, if we do good for the higher power he will probably want to keep us around.

This, but if you don't know basics of Scholasticism and its terminology, you can very easily misinterpret what they say. They aren't a good source for a beginner.

That's good. That means you're actually thinking about things.

Do you ever feel unsatisfied with atheism's inability to answer existential questions? Like "why is there something rather than nothing" for example.

I used to think a lot like you. I couldn't stop thinking about death and the nothingness thereafter.

God is calling you to seek him.

Good, intellectually honesty isn't a trait you find all that often.

Don't follow down the path of those that delude themselves into claiming that cessation of existence is nothing to be feared because [you won't be around to notice] or think that they can somehow avoid death through technological means. If nothing else, the heat death of the universe will get you.

Now, I can't prove God to you; the best thing I can do is tell you that I was more or less in the same position you are, and that God started to intervene in my life in ways and with a frequency, that it would have been foolish to dismiss the evidence as a string of coincidences.

It probably doesn't sound very helpful right now, but God promises that he would reveal himself to everyone that would earnestly seek him (and I believe you are already doing so, since God embodies the ideals of Truth and Life, which you sound like you are after,) so keep on keeping on. Patience is a virtue. (remember that, it's important)

then you are fucking brainlet retard

im sorry but i had my atheist phase too but nothing says it like that

you're talking as if there is a self and its not an illusion. In atheistic perspective of course. Even in my atheist days i didnt believe in my own individuality and always known im part of something bigger, an ecosystem.

>atheist, presumably the anti-feels one

29b11a No.598860

I find that strange. Especially as an atheist you should understand that your own self is the only thing you can actually be sure exists.

2f3a4c No.598862

its an illusion from the brain.Of course in atheistic therms.

everyone is you and you are everyone whil at the same time being no one

Sounds like mystical new-age mumbo-jumbo to me.

Who is having the illusion?

2f3a4c No.598866

it sounds like that but thats a scientific fact. I too hate the new-age movement

aa3a47 No.600579

Yeah. I don’t consider atheism itself to be an answer to anything other than the belief in a god, though. I.e cosmology might answer questions about space but those answers not being religious has nothing to do with atheism as a means of answering questions.

The singularity and “you won’t notice” crowds are completely different camps though?

Improve your diet, quit drinking and/or smoking weed, and start exercising. I know its generic advice, but it works, both for mind and body. I'm not saying your spiritual inquiries are unimportant, but it almost seems like you're wistfully gazing at death's door and wondering what's on the other side, rather than applying Christ's teachings to shine a light on this world.

I don’t do drugs, fortunately. Also my current mindset isn’t my intention, I just cannot seem to shake it.

>I started looking into NDE’s but the experiment run to prove their veracity was considered a total failure.

Sure the science around NDEs is debatable, but NDEs are a thing and if you've done your research OP you'd know there are NDEs that makes it clear that there is a spiritual dimension. Honestly, at the end of the day, God says in the Bible, seek Him and you will find. You need to understand that there is plenty of "evidence" out there to support God's existence, but the important thing you need is faith.
