#1 Hard physical labor. Whether this be paid work or intense exercise or competitive sports, every man should become proficiently stronger and more athletic as they mature.

#2 Martial arts. Every man should know how to fight and hold his own and be able to teach his sons valuable techniques and lessons.

#3 Be married and have children. This is another experience of maturity that makes a man.

#4 Dedicate his life to a higher cause, a noble goal and godly living.

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,

Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,

And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;

If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

And treat those two impostors just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,

And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings

And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

And lose, and start again at your beginnings

And never breathe a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew

To serve your turn long after they are gone,

And so hold on when there is nothing in you

Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,

If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,

If all men count with you, but none too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute

With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,

Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,

And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

That Miyamoto Musashi quote is just flat out wrong though tbh. “Seek nothing outside of yourself” is a surefire way to end up in Hell, along with MM. Pagan wisdom only goes so far.

Self-sacrificial love, as we were given the perfect example of in Jesus Christ; " It is more blessed to give than to receive." Daily meditation upon scripture to mould himself to the will of God. etc.

If you want a practical book, 'Disciplines of a Godly Man' is pleasingly as subtle as a brick and about as complicated, but virtue needn't be scholarly. A little stereotypically American in its approach to anecdotes and examples, but it's easily looked over and has a lot of great value to say. If you can read it without it burning your conscience, you're either a saint or damned!

C.S.Lewis's 'Mere Christianity' also has a section on the 7 virtues; the 4 cardinal:

>prudence

>courage

>justice

>temperance

And the 3 theological:

>faith

>hope

>love

There are also the books of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Job etc.

Its about self improvement. Not salvation. Read the first part.

Also the kingdom of god is within us and so is the holy spirit. So ya turning within is profitable even for spiritual matters

> Its about self improvement. Not salvation. Read the first part.

Going away from sin and heading towards God is a big part of self-improvement as well as salvation.

> Also the kingdom of god is within us and so is the holy spirit

If God is within us, he is most certainly outside us as well. And within us is great sin and evil as well. Also, outside us are other people who we can learn from and great spiritual teachings. Basically I just don’t buy this “everything you need is inside you” stuff. It sounds like Zen nonsense. If you are truly seeking God, you are not limiting yourself to what is inside you. If

I know what you mean but I also read the quote generously…

I think its really about discipline, and discipline is inside us. For practical matters its really important, even if you seek guidance from an external teacher it still depends on you in a sense to go there, humble yourself, use his information, test it, apply it, etc…

Everything should be based on sacrifice which is the masculine virtue. Sacrifice yourself for the world and be christlike
