In 1 Samuel, it notes that Hannah went to the House of the Lord at Shiloh. Is this a temple? Were there multiple temples? What was the difference between a synagogue and a temple in ancient practice? Was the temple at Jerusalem the only temple that counts?

When Israel and Judah split after Solomon's death, Jeroboam (King of Israel) started a new temple system and instated a new priesthood and religious worship sites in order to prevent his people from taking Israeli sacrifices to Judah to sacrifice at the temple in Jerusalem. Jeroboam started new centers in Dan and Beth-El. These temples where dedicated to God thought they used different symbolism.

So yes there where multiple temples dedicated to God in the ancient Israeli world. The Shiloh priesthood specifically were the ones who ran the Tabernacle that housed the Ark, but they where deposed by Solomon for political reasons.

This. There were many temples, but only was accepted, since only one was commanded by God. Let it be a lesson to us that God does not accept our worship when it is offered at variance with His word.

The "House of the Lord" in 1st Samuel was the Tabernacle of Moses, which was essentially a big tent.

It was not until the reign of Solomon in 1st Kings when a stationary Temple was made as >>598046 said, though it was not simply made for political reasons.
