So, I’ve read up on Catholicism and been to Mass a few times, but I didn’t grow up in the Church and I missed Cathecism this year, meaning I can’t give confession or take communion. I’d like to do both, but I was told that I can’t yet. I’d like to go just for social reasons, but I have to watch my 8 month old by myself that day because my wife works on Sunday and he’s such a squirmy guy it’s a huge pain and I miss most of it by taking him outside to calm down. It makes me feel frustrated and I just don’t go. Thoughts?

>It makes me feel frustrated and I just don’t go

Feelings have nothing to do with duties

No reason to feel frustrated that you need to care care of your son, anon. Go, catch what bits you can, and over time you'll catch all of it. Also, realize that if you feel self-conscious about having to step out with your son to calm him down, that's probably just a temptation trying to get you to stop going.

Lastly, everyone there who is a parent (and pretty much everyone who is not) understands that kids can get antsy and no one cares, in case that bit gives you any anxiety.

Make him lift some weights to tire him out.

I guess part of it too is that I’m more frustrated that I can’t give confession or take communion and I don’t really understand the point if I can’t do those two things. I was raised Atheist so I don’t know a lot of the reasons that someone would go to Mass for other than confession/communion, it’s a beautiful ceremony, but i feel like I’m missing something.

I'm not sure about the RC understanding, but the Orthodox understanding is that taking the Eucharist requires a decent amount of preparation on the part of the believer, and without knowing how to properly prepare (based in your catechism), it could actually be spiritually damaging to you. Think purifying/cleansing fire vs consuming fire verses from Scripture.

As to the other sacraments, it's important to be catechized to understand those as well. If you're set on being a part of the RC church, make time for catechism or see if there's a schedule you might work out with a local priest. I'd be surprised if you can't work something out.

God Bless, anon.

Well, you are not Priest, so no giving confession :^)

As for receiving confession, if you truly want to be Catholic and receive this sacrament, fruit of it is already in you. That does not mean that you should not take it as soon as it can though. Have hope.

> or take communion

See above.

Center of Mass is of course Eucharist, but Mass is not Eucharist only. It is still important. No private worship is greater than public worship of mass. Mass is official and public teaching of word of God. It's prayer for alive and dead. It's uniteing self with threefold Church. It's occasion to almsgiving.

But most importantly you can offer yourself in sacrifice upon altar, presnt to God your deeds, thoughts, prayers, you very self. Even if you cannot particpate with table of Lord, supper is still open to you.

I guarantee you that no church cares about a squirmy baby. People legit want to see babies in church.

No worries; many people at Mass understand that babies and children get antsy.

I would say that if your schedule allows for it then you can attend the Vigil Mass which is just a Mass on Saturday evenings that counts towards your Sunday obligation. There should also be a Low Daily Mass during the weekdays if you want to start attending more often.

There is a real beauty to the Mass and even though you cannot receive communion there is still a place for you there. I'd recommend a book for you to read if you have the time. It is mainly about the Traditional Latin Mass but it does a great job of explaining the beauty and importance of the Mass as a whole.
