Each day the darkness grows. Are demonic forces slowly revealing themselves to the public? I sense something is coming. Something is wrong.

Yes, definitely. Here's an except from Fr. Amorth's book "An exorcist tells his story". He was on of the top exorcists in Italy:

The first factor that influences the increase of evil influences is Western consumerism.

The majority of people have lost their faith due to a materialistic and hedonistic lifestyle. I

believe that a good portion of the blame is to be attributed to socialism and communism,

especially in Italy, where Marxist doctrine has dominated the media and the culture in the

past few years. It is estimated that barely 12 percent of the population of Rome attends

Sunday Mass; it is a well-known fact that where religion regresses, superstition

progresses. We can see the proliferation, especially among the young, of spiritism,

witchcraft, and the occult. We can add to this the pursuit of yoga, Zen, transcendental

meditation: these are all practices based on reincarnation, on dissolving the human person

into divinity, or, in any case, on other doctrines that are unacceptable to Christians. We do

not need to go to India anymore to find gurus; we can find them at our doorsteps. Often

these apparently innocent practices bring about hallucinations and schizophrenic

conditions. To this I can add the exponential proliferation of many sects, many of which

bear a distinctly satanic mark.

Witchcraft and spiritism are taught on TV. Books on the occult are sold at newspaper

stands and even through the mail. Then we can add the various collections of newspapers

and horror shows where a satanic twist is added to sex and violence. And we cannot omit

mentioning the growing popularity of a type of music that is almost obsessive; I refer in

particular to satanic rock. Piero Mantero expands on this subject in his book Satana e lo

stratagemma delta coda (Udine: Segno, 1988). When I was invited to speak at a few high

schools, I was able personally to verify how great is the influence of these tools of Satan

on the young. It is unbelievable how widespread are witchcraft and spiritism, in all their

forms, in middle and high school. This evil is everywhere, even in small towns.

It's a very interesting book and I'm actually reading it right now, if you're interested: http://www.youngandcatholicng.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/An-Exorcist-Tells-His-Story-Gabriele-Amorth.pdf

Do understand that it will only get worse. Look at the developments since the 1600's. While there are technological advances and comforts that one could never imagine, you also have degeneracy spreading and more people than ever falling to darkness. With temptations that will poison your mind being only a few mouse clicks away.

What do you think of Padre Pio?

I honestly think some of the comforts that technological advances have brought us are a big part of the problem. People now are completely unaccustomed to ever feeling discomfort. We can quite easily adjust things as simple as the temperature of our rooms to suit us, our chairs are more padded everywhere, we take cushy cars wherever we need to go, and we have all manner of food available to us cheaply.

In the US especially, for middle class folks (even if they're living "paycheck to paycheck" we effectively live in a post-scarcity society. Certainly there can be hardship and difficulty, and I find that the toughest times in my life bring about the most spiritual advancement.

It's hard to take an honest look at my life and say that it's been an easy road to Christianity for myself. I still need to always remind myself that everything I have has been given from God's bounty and that I need to be thankful for it. I know the above minimized the issues that a good portion of the population faces to an extent, as access dramatically improves with wage. And yet the thing that gets me most about the scriptures are that the very same problems that early Christians had in their faith, we have, but from a different angle.

To the OP's point, the "rise of darkness" that I've felt in the recent years is what drove me back into church, and while it's tough to see and tough to live through, we always must be mindful that these things must come to pass and stay vigilant that we might await His return.
