Hey /christian/ i grew up as a "united protestant" however my family never really went to church or read the bible. Now i just recently got my own bible and finished genesis. A part of me wants to just stay as a united protestant but really i have no idea if i should convert into a catholic or where to start with anything. On one hand i'm not sure if i like the direction the Catholic church seems to be heading and i heard that they often contradict the bible. On the other hand the united protestants around me seem to be pretty "hippy" and not in the good Jesus type of way(see pic related). I am lost and would really appreciate any guidance you can provide.

But seriously though, its hard to tell you something specifically, since you haven't stated your points in detail, but Orthodoxy retains the true church tradition that apostles have delivered.

Not sure if a good source, but OCA has a good guideline in English. Not as detailed as Catholics have with newadvent, but still:

WRONG

Faith alone.

Acts 16

30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

No baby sprinkling.

Acts 8

36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?

37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.

No worshipping man.

Acts 10

25 And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him.

26 But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man.

Jesus went to hell for 3 days.(some cadogox believe this)

Acts 2

31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.

>Faith alone.

>5. Regarding the way in which salvation is appropriated by the believers, Lutherans, by teaching that justification and salvation are by grace alone through faith (sola gratia, sola fide), stress the absolute priority of divine grace in salvation. When they speak about saving faith they do not think of the dead faith which even the demons have (cf. James 2:19), but the faith which Abraham showed and which was reckoned to him as righteousness (cf. Gen. 15:6, Rom. 4:3,9). The Orthodox also affirm the absolute priority of divine grace. They underline that it is God's grace which enables our human will to conform to the divine will (cf. Phil 2:13) in the steps of Jesus praying, "not as I will but as You will" (Matthew 26:39), so that we may work out our salvation in fear and trembling (cf. Phil. 2:12). This is what the Orthodox mean by "synergy" (working together) of divine grace and the human will of the believer in the appropriation of the divine life in Christ. The understanding of synergy in salvation is helped by the fact that the human will in the one person of Christ was not abolished when the human nature was united in Him with the divine nature, according to the Christological decisions of the Ecumenical Councils. While Lutherans do not use the concept of synergy, they recognize the personal responsibility of the human being in the acceptance or refusal of divine grace through faith, and in the growth of faith and obedience to God. Lutherans and Orthodox both understand good works as the fruits and manifestations of the believer's faith and not as a means of salvation.

We dont see works and faith as completely separate, but we see works as manifestation of faith.

2)says nothing about baby baptism

3)we dont worship man. There is a difference between praying to someone and asking someone to pray for you.

4)>19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;

>20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

Op here i suppose despite my hesitance the best thing for me right now would be to go to my local catholic church and get baptized. After that stay for a few sermons and decide what to do from there. Thats the plan so far but i will still keep this thread open and respond to you guys. Thank you for all the suggestions and information, may Christ reward you for your helpfulness.

What exactly do you mean here?

>and i heard that they often contradict the bible.

You heard wrong - most of these accusations come from cherrypicked verses, which aren't contrary to Church teachings when placed in their context or when you study them deeper. Also, be aware that many arguments against Catholicism are based on implicit, unnecessary premises - double check on any argument you find convincing and think what premises the author supposes. Catholic Encyclopedia on newadvent.org is always a solid source on both our beliefs and why we believe in then. And you can always ask here, there are many Catholics willing to answer.

e1b937 No.584391

Avoid anything with the title "united" in its name, usually doesn't mean a good thing (pantheistic, liberal, etc.). I would recommend you check churches near you, and look at their statements of faith. Look for any red flags like being "accepting" of all gender identities or a denial of basic doctrine like the trinity. Baptist and non-denominational churches in my experience tend to be the most consistently conservative in my experience. Good luck, anon.

I would research what is the Bible, how do we know which books going to the Bible, how we know those books are inspired. Then I'd research the first Christians, the ones who learned from the apostles. This is a good starting point I think.

Of course not, we don't read it by our own power alone as you do, we have the great wealth of tradition and wisdom handed down to us by the Church fathers and all councils. Makes you wonder who is right and who isn't, but that's easily discerned.

The real problem you as a whole have is being taught from a young age to hate the real, visible Church, and every other error stems from that. Abandon your legacy of hate and accept the truth is my advice to you.
