A Christian campus group, kicked off campus by the University of Iowa, has sued for violating their First Amendment rights, according to their attorneys at the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty. Business Leaders in Christ, a student organization at the Tippie School of Business had a core requirement that its leaders uphold biblical moral standards, including refraining from sexual immorality. The group had rejected a student for a leadership position because he is a homosexual, prompting a complaint to school officials. The group’s student organization credentials were yanked immediately. The move revokes the group’s access to a small portion of student activity fees, use of on-campus facilities, on-campus recruitment, and other benefits afforded all other credentialed student organizations. In a statement describing their decision, the group’s current leadership said:
>BLinC declined the student’s request because he expressly stated that he rejected BLinC’s religious beliefs and would not follow them.
Eric Baxter, the group’s attorney from the Washington, D.C., based Becket Fund added:
>"This is premeditated religious discrimination, plain and simple. A state school cannot demand a change to students’ faith any more than the U.S. president could demand a change to the Bible."
The university, which has been the subject of a number of costly lawsuits related to its policies in recent months, has declined to comment on the case, which will be tried in federal court.
