How many of the denominations are real? How many will truly lead to salvation?
All of them?
Of course not.
What causes denominations?
People converting to Christianity.
>There is still the real truth out there
Doesn't change anything.
If you didn't start out as a Christian and then later on become a Christian the chance of not 100% following the ways increases dramatically.
Yet, since Christianity is supposed to be "the one true path" all you need is someone with enough clout changing things and everybody has to either follow or risk "going to hell".
Conversion to Christianity has been its downfall since day one.

i completely disagree with this.
from what i've seen, cradle christians (me for the majority of my life) are usually less likely to take the faith seriously, they take it for granted, whereas new converts are usually really zealous, they have a fire lit under their ass for the LORD.
>What causes denominations?
>People converting to Christianity.
for every example of this (religious syncretism) happening i can think of, (rastafarianism, santeria, etc) i wouldn't count any of them as Christian

He chose a protestant sect over the authentic church, and because of the works of a corrupt priest, or an apparently corrupt clergy.
Under the same logic, why accept Jesus Christ if Judas Iscariot betrayed Him, nay, had him accused and executed by the Jews? Is it because Christ didn't know? Or is it because of the will of God that the true path is alighted with temptations to disbelieve and doubt even from within? And yet, this same Holy Catholic Church has survived for over two millenia…
I will pray for him, definitely.

these "great thinkers of our past" were just fallible men like me.
sometimes they can offer great insight, some of them were geniuses, but we shouldn't look to them as infallible authorities.
sometimes they just made stuff up:
>But to return from where I had digressed, by the time Paul reached the age of a hundred and thirteen, the ninety-year-old Antony was still living in another part of the desert. Antony used to say that it then occurred to him to wonder whether there was any monk in the desert more perfect than he was, and it was revealed to him at night while sleeping that there was one much better than he further into the mountain, and that he ought to make haste to visit him. As dawn broke the venerable old man set out he knew not where, supporting his weak old limbs with the help of a staff. By the middle of the day with the sun hot overhead he was burning with the heat, but did not consider for a minute abandoning the journey once begun.
>"I believe in my God, " he said, "who will show me his servant as he has promised."
>He had no sooner spoken than he saw a creature half man, half horse, which in the opinion of the poets is called a Hippocentaur. As soon as he saw it he signed himself on the forehead with the cross.
>"You, there!" he cried, "Whereabouts in these parts does the servant of God live?"
>The creature made strange, half crazy noises, mangling words which meant nothing, with a face all covered with bristly hair, while fawningly trying to make itself understood. It then pointed with its right hand in the desired direction, raced over the open countryside with the speed of a bird and vanished from sight. I don't rightly know whether this was an apparition sent by the devil to terrify him, or simply an animal spawned by the desert, which is a breeding ground for all sorts of monstrous beasts.
