I know practically nothing of the man but intend to get through some of his volumes at sompoint in my life. However it is my understanding that he's only now considered liberal due to his evaluation of paul on Christianity. However these writings came only in the past recent years, before which time the majority of his writings were produced and as far as I'm aware he nor they ever considered liberal and indeed championed by most small-o orthodox stalwarts. So in this assessment of him there is this temporal aspect that it is imoprtant to consider. But I may be wrong about this it's just what I recall.
