That's tough to overcome. I can't say as I was ever in the same situation because I was raised from infancy to care more about my fellow man than myself, but there will come for you an epiphany. Embrace it.

You've spent an incredible amount of time amongst Christians. You've been exposed to the #1 best source for becoming a faithful Christian yourself, if you are not already one deep down.

Look after your fellow man, love others, be a guardian of peace and a keeper of the world - if you do these things, your passage to heaven is all but assured. Apologise for your past transgressions and avoid sin in future. The kind of sin that will prevent your ascension to heaven are those in which you hurt people or animals. Avoid those sins especially. Every day, try to think about the balance of good/bad you did. Always try to finish your day having done more good for others than yourself.

I'm greatly simplifying here. I don't mean "here is a heaven checklist go tick it off" … more just that you should, at the very least, make your life leave a positive imprint on the world & people around you because that is what God wills us to do.

And yes, the sins which are considered utterly reprehensible are those which harm others on purpose. Yes, you can be forgiven - Jesus made that very clear - but one should always avoid harming others in the first place.

Oh, I'm not saying that OP shouldn't join the faith proper. Of course he should since he's already immersed himself so much in it. I'm just saying that the core tenets of Christianity are things that he likely already knows how to do and can work on RIGHT NOW, even before he reads the literature and attends services.
