Yes, but you need to hold it for a couple of weeks before the census date then ditch the full-time study load. Although universities in NSW now talk to NSW Trains directly and will be become aware when you are not eligible: you have a period before it cuts off. This process will need to be completed next semester.
The only downside is that you have a set time to complete the degrees, if you want the students payment. If you didn't complete anything I can imagine they will eventually fuck you off, to free up space for another place for another student? That's why you cannot defer more than a year

To clarify, I mean that you need to be enrolled until your university tells NSW Trains that you are enrolled full-time , a part-time load I do not think makes you eligible or is in some circumstances as an Australian citizen (that's another clause but there are some get around because international students complained).

When I was attending university last year or the year before when my ticket was checked a police officer (change over to new staff) came up and asked for my Opal card. I produced it and he checked it against his system, it said that I tapped on X station and that I am still a student on their system.
NSW Trains system is terribly slow, it took 3 months before they realised that I was not enrolled full-time. I was but wasn't due to a fucked up circumstance mental breakdown. I then had 60 or 90 days to confirm that I was a full time student. People I knew used their card during that time, but I am not certain if it was checked by an officer.
Finally, the balance of any Opal card connect to your account, even when deactivated can be transfer to a new card. Just ring them up and they can transfer the balance over. I had $11 on the card and got it on my new student card, which was a plus.

I withdrew from a very important internship, it pissed them off but when they realised that I had a mental breakdown and it wasn't bullshit they were nicer.
