Do you have cash to burn and dont give a fuck?

If no dont get any cars you mentioned. Skylines, supras etc are over 20 years old now, real fun but shit interior, shit fuel economy, and shit safety.

Do you need a ute?

i'll mainly be driving to and from work but maybe also the occasional off-roading and road tripping. So a 4x4 then i guess.

no and yes

I'm not too fussed about safety or fuel economy. but i'm broke as fuck so i think i'll just buy something cheap and practical.

Forget off-roading for now, just get your butt in whatever Camry or Corolla you can afford and enjoy your new RELIABLE freedom. Don't by some clapped out shitbox that some other P plater or half-arsed off-roader has already killed, or you'll spend all your weekends with your head under the bonnet.

I have to agree with earlier poster that for less than $5000 you should just get something reliable.

If you go for something fancy at that price it will be a really old and really well used one that will cause you problems.

Corolla or Commodore. Something with plenty of parts available, because if you're buying an older car you'll need to replace bits and pieces every other service and you don't want them to be special order.

They're reliable and not shit.

I know mate, I've got two of them. They're also expensive as fucking hell compared to anything of a similar age because they hold their value extremely well.

Go look up 20yo Hiluxes and then look up 20yo Camrys. Without even looking I'd guess you'd be seeing $10,000 v $2,500.

All that said, if you find a Hilux you like and can afford it, go for it.

srsly, a $5k commonwhore is good for a P-plater. Plus if shit does go wrong, parts are cheap and easily available.

Wait until you've got your full license and a bit more experience under your belt before buying something nice, just drive a shitbox for now. While you're a new driver it's almost an inevitability that you'll cause a few dings and dents and other problems that would make you weep if you had a nicer car.

buy any toyota, i drive a 09 hi ace van and she goes like a dream. second youtube maintenance on that particular model. important things obviously are oil, air, sparks, serp belt, timing belt (if possible get a toyo with a chain belt instead) taper covers, water pump, injectors cleaned (if needed) fuel pump and most importantly ur brakes cunt, alot of people ignore these. keep on top of this and ur toyota will possibly outlive urself if u aren't already a fat cunt such as myself.

How much did you pay.

Do you full service yourself? I dont think our shitty government would allow that.

I'm looking to get a van or 4x4 that i could travel/live out of, 10K - 20K any recommendations?

>>How much?

at the time i paid around 31k, that is including the van, loan charges and interest. Now days they go for around 15k.

>>do i maintain the full service myself?

yes, always. I was fortunate to have my dad whom was a mechanic back in the day, show me the trade. It makes sense to DIY since paying a mechanic is so god damn expensive now days however truth be told, some areas of the vehicle as far as maintenance goes, u must know what you are doing or face engine failure.if u know someone that can show u even better.

>>I'm looking to get a van or 4x4

look it depends on what kind of travel you are thinking of doing. Obviously if u are looking to go off road or drive on sandy beaches and u are wanting to live in as well, i would recommend a 4 cyl toyota landcruiser with towbar + a small pop out camper trailer. Price wise may cost up to 20k for the lot, remember now days if u got cash and can hagle with people, 9 times out of 10 u will get it cheaper.

Other option is a 2 tonne van with barn doors and if u can find a van with 4x4 capabilities even better. As far as brands go for this, remember to stick to household names such as ford, toyota ect DO NOT buy Mercedes, fiat, volkswagon (parts are fuckin $$$$$ and they tend to fuck up alot) fair warning.

hope this helps
