There's no problem with saying elements of culture have utility, and treating them as sacred has utility. The example someone else used was the idea of treating every gun as loaded. Even if the gun isn't loaded, to act and live in a way where you check the chamber, make sure the magazine is empty, and never point it at anyone, even though you know full-well it wasn't loaded when it was handed to you, is a valuable delusion.
You don't need to convince me to treat elements of culture as sacred. You do have to convince me that they're sacred because of how old they are. You also have to tell me that you're not just accidentally connecting dots between cultures, and presuming their causes.
Now, last we spoke I hadn't read the book you're talking about. But now I have.
