Numbers are incredibly powerful tools and a useful notion without needing to attach this idea of "units".
There are a wide variety of pure mathematical topics in which the utilization of numbers and in particular the structures they product both algebraically and topologically allow for a foundation in which more complex results can be built upon.
An explicit example would be in group theory, when studying cyclic structures. A lot of it hinges on the fact that all cyclic structures are either isomorphic to the set of integers or isomorphic to a factor group of a specific order for finite cyclic groups. This idea allows for a lot of very useful theorems and the utilization of number theory presents some nice results.
