i can give a long explanation for it but the short one is the Chinese lied about it and paid journalists to spread the story in the west, Chinese communists used the lie of the massacre to instill hatred of us into chinese people, westerners believed it too thanks to the book "The rape of Nanking" by Iris Chang, Iris Chang isn't a historian and her book has hundreds of errors, she should've been laughed at but instead for whatever reason people praised her as a hero for writing a shitty book with hundreds of errors and straight up false information

Aight Kanra, I think the best way to describe culture to you is thusly; culture is the intrinsic assumption of common knowledge, with respect to any given specific aspect of the human experience, between two individuals which is more efficient and more accurate than the process of articulation, between individuals, on a case by case basis.
Culture is everything about a person you can take for granted by virtue of assumed common experience. Much like I am able to assume that you are capable of reading and interpreting my words through the cultural lense of English as a language. If neither of us spoke English, the efficiency of our communication would suffer immensely. Misunderstandings in the game of life can be fatal; are fatal. Culture isn't simply a construct of sociocultural psychology; it literally allows you to comprehend other people with efficiency greater than that of someone who doesnt share your specific experiences. There are things about growing up in X city and in X culture than only people who have done so can fully apprehend the consequential aspects of the affective behavioral significance to their lives and their ethical and moral schema.
Culture, and a fluent understanding of yours and others, keeps you alive.
Hope you're doing well.

sounds like culture is shared memes. and memes are information that can be held in the mind. sometimes with emotional connotation and context.
eg. wearing black to funerals is a shared meme, and a cultural norm. emotional connotation is mourning.
eg. standing during the national anthem is a shared meme, and a cultural norm. emotional connotation depends on the decade.
eg. wearing baggy clothes is a shared meme, and more acossiated with the youth. emotional connotation depends on the decade.
eg. saying Chinaman is a shared meme, it used to directly mean people from China, but now it's seen as a slur.
eg. disco used to be culturally known as cool, now it's culturally known as retro and dated.
eg. "an eye for an eye" didn't exist as part of English language til the King James version of the Bible.
Culture changes. and evolves. people change and evolve. And everyone is selective. We shed cultures and change our emotional connotations based on internal and external pressures. Many are self-inflicted. If you're who I think you are, you only need to look at how your own emotions have evolved related to your current geography.
>There are things about growing up in X city and in X culture than only people who have done so can fully apprehend the consequential aspects of the affective behavioral significance to their lives and their ethical and moral schema.

dude, I think we're on the same page. it sounds like you've given this a lot of thought, and I'm sorry I'm still shit at brevity. my issue was that you didn't seem to accept how malleable and flexible culture is. sure, some last longer than others. English and proverbs around cultural stories about "glass houses" and "curiousity killed the cat" and "blood is thicker than water" last longer than others, but disco died, and just because disco was a part of culture and history, we can still change our minds about bell-bottoms.

Well, I have to say I did not realise that you perceived my definition as such.
All I can say in response is that I do appreciate, to the extent I am capable, the malleable aspects of culture. But, my perspective, in so far as it pertains to your own, and the articulation of mine into language and definitional terminology you can agree with, is that your perception of culture does not give due respect to the fundamental emergent properties.
Culture isn't simply, say, what you've attributed to it in your post; though it very much is all that and more. It is also, say, the expectation that everyone on the road shares a common knowledge of the road rules. It's the expectation, assumed, presuppositionally, through experience, that when you walk outside without a headscarf on, as a woman, you will be beaten to death with rocks.
Culture is a very important tool, and is as malleable as it is unchanging and unchangeable. That's been the crux of my point; that it isn't something you can simply tell people to change, or have society pressure to change. These things evolve organically and we, as scientists, have very little idea how they do so. I have no idea why Chinese culture evolved different road rules to American culture; but it did. And being ignorant of either and driving a car in either will get you killed or imprisoned immediately.

I would also like to make a comment on what your sentiment appears to me to be regarding the malleability of culture; "We should change it for the better. And not fear to do so."
This is my read on your position.
My position is the opposite, despite having a very similar comprehension. My position is this; culture is not simply a construct, it is self evidently fundamental to the function of human society. And to change and alter these factors of culture, say, the way we speak, or the manner in which we are able to touch one another, the appropriate barriers and constituent elements of economic policies etc. Is to change the very fabric of the psychology of the individuals effected.
People are, rightly, very concerned and very apprehensive and very suspicious about any alteration demanded of them by the ruling classes on their instincts and intuitions.
Fucking with culture is dangerous.
a7101c No.2267790

Insofar is a single word btw. how neat is that?
>give due respect to the fundamental emergent properties
There's no idea worth respecting just because it's fundamental or widespread; cropping up in groups of people of independant geographies. Believing in demons, tribalism, human sacrifice, praying to the sky are all fundamental emergent properties across villages and groups, and it's been our escape from those fundamental (base in the derogatory sence) properties that have produced the sorts of superior cultures we have today.
There was a time when nobody knew any culture except they one they grew up in. Their ideas of good and evil came from those around them. But exposure to more and more people and cultures made us realize that our conceits about what we revere and consider sacred, gave us a chance to re-evaluate.
We were able to shed culture and memes based on their usefulness and our goals. America was a country that rebelled against the innate idea of tribal heads, then King Richard II. and created a superior nation. Demanding and fighting for cultural change is a risk. You may be condemned and shunned. Fundamental emergent properties of shaming others so they fall in line.
I'm not a relativist. I know culture is a useful tool, and essentially a language. But given the chance, we should be allowed to adopt aspects of culture when they fit our needs, and remove them when they no longer serve us. If we treat some any element of culture as sacred, and beyond question or reproach, we close ourselves off from the possibility of a superior version of those cultures.

Your sentiment is exceedingly Nietzschian.
The problem of comparing moral systems Is the fact that no one man has the length of life or strength of will necessary to derive meaning for all human experience from his observations and experiences. Stalin thought he was that man. Hitler. Mussolini. Pol pot.
Culture and the narratives within that culture act as a structural framework to hang moral and ethical precepts and axioms upon. In the same manner that a single man cannot build a skyscraper, no single man can build a culture or a moral schema. Even if the theory is sound.
It is just too complicated. Literally.

So you seem to understand my position perfectly.
Now you've laid our your position.
>culture is not simply a construct
>it is self evidently fundamental to the function of human society
Culture is a construct. The fact cultures are different based on geography and history, or die off, proves this. One example I love is after the collapse of the Roman Empire, literacy was almost decimated. Scattered tribes across Europe, some mere miles away, wound up speaking different languages and had differing beliefs. Because of the lack of literacy, ideas like "audits" and "hearings" were invented, as a listening based system of law. Science and philosophy and math almost entirely disappeared in Europe. How to form questions and answer them vanished; the very idea of syllogisms were lost.
Yet these villages functioned. And they all functioned differently.
What does this story do to your definition of culture not merely being a construct?
>to change and alter these factors of culture... the way we speak... or the manner in which we are able to touch one another... the appropriate barriers and constituent elements of economic policies etc. Is to change the very fabric of the psychology of the individuals effected.

Culture is a construct to the same extent that, say, competence hierarchies are constructs. Which they are. There is a big difference between an organic construct and the implementation of theory into practice through enforced tyranny of principle. Which is exactly what you have to do to people to change their instincts.
But you can't simply change an entire culture to value a person and a behavior over something else without consequence. Look at the Soviet Union. That's exactly what they did. They constructed a culture from nothing through pure theory. Or the Great Leap Forward.
The fewer people involved with the founding of an ideal, the less likely it is to embody the ideals of the people it is to be held against. The complexity of life is such that is a certainty.

I'm enjoying this. I'll do my best not to get rambly. I want to drink in a few minutes. But I'm still here. My view is one where we can stand outside of culture, and look at it. We don't need to embody any culture, and we can respect its utility from an external level.
This is the only view that makes sense.

>In the same manner that a single man cannot build a skyscraper, no single man can build a culture or a moral schema.
>Even if the theory is sound. It is just too complicated. Literally.
Unless we had some sort of system that was flexible, and allowed for changes to the schema. Imagine if the Founding Fathers sat around one day, telling themselves that it was impossible to start anew, to create a new system. Said it was a fool's errand to advocate a government not directly tied to the idea of a divinely endowed ruler like the Pope or the King. Imagine if they looked back millenia and noticed the tribalism and the idea of chieftans, and told themselves any system they created needed a chieftan all had to obey.
Imagine if they rationalized the utility of a King, justified by thousands of historical examples, and told themselves Kings were fundamental emergent properties directly tied to our nature. "To create a society where citizens may question their rules will result in chaos, so therefore there must always be an unquestionable ruler."
How do we know they'd be wrong?

The social landscape is as much a part of the world as is the actual material reality we traverse. More so, for us humans. And it is just as affected by the processes of evolution through natural selection.
What makes a man morally good, or good at surviving, is not stable. Culturally or materially. We all rely on the articulate and collective narrative wisdom engrained in our stories and in our ideals and behaviors, which we inherit via culture, in the same manner one inherits their eye color.
If you believe you're capable of examining every piece of life down to the objective level of analysis then you'll simply fractal your conscious perspective down into the inane. You can certainly add to the collective wisdom of humanity, but you certainly can't replicate, and objectively prove your replication accurate, the collective wisdom of humanity. In the same manner no one man has the collective skill and knowledge to construct an iPhone.
345407 No.2267866
bf7eba No.2267867
I would also like to point out that an iPhone is many orders of magnitude simpler than even the simplest aspects of modern technological society.
The human brain goes far beyond the complexity of anything we know of. The collective constructs of millions of humans across hundreds of thousands of years is not something you can replicate with good intentions. Not even with the most ascendant genius.

It didn't seem like you replied to my criticisms. Namely that experimentation in changing values has paid off, and culture has changed immensely, and that various populations have managed to get along just fine despite different cultures.
America being an example, where my last story laid out a hypothetical where the Founding Fathers told themselves to be limited by the thousands of examples of unquestionable rulers, and the fact they broke free and did something different, forced societies to re-examine what ways of living are possible.
>My position is this; culture is not simply a construct, it is self evidently fundamental to the function of human society.
it is a construct. and it was changed during the American Revolution, or the Civil War. the South had their idea of slavery smashed in from the outside, and the world is better off for it.

I don't know what's morally right for other people, the best I can do is trust my instincts and intuition and adhere to the principles I would desire of others. That's all I've got. I'm very cautious of anyone who thinks they can tamper with a culture or society at will and have it end up better for everyone; the 21st century is a testament to just how idiotic and wasteful that ethic is.

Answer me this, as my response to your question:
1. Would you rather be a slave, or own a slave?
2. Slavery is more sophisticated, but there isn't an object in your home you can touch which hasn't in some manner been constructed or transported through the use of slavery. Does this mean that you will forbid yourself of the fruits of that suffering? There is only a single chocolate company in the world which can authentically claim not to involve slaves in the procurement of the beans, for example.
3. Precisely how much slavery is acceptable to you before you will forgo a product or item? Even the most beneficial and valuable things you can potentially possess.
4. Do you believe that slavery, being a human universal, has no utility? Putting aside the ethical and moral considerations?

Answering you will answer my question? Let's see.
1. Own a slave.
2. Some of the things I own were made by machines.
3. Not sure how much slavery is okay.
4. Of course it has utility.
Since we live in a world where most places no longer have slaves, and the need has been immensely reduced thanks to technology, and America is still standing... it's okay to destroy aspects of culture, or to ammend cultures, without the world falling apart.
Same with my Founding Fathers deciding to have an unquestionable ruler example, and how there is plenty of utility in having someone like that, who can order and organize his people without beauracy, and there's lots of rationalizing the utility in having someone who can do that. Or the psychological benefit of having a single being as a ruler, because it plays to our ideas of submission to our parents. Or how there's more homogeny of viewpoints, resulting in peace.
My issue is saying either of these things are inherently true, and rebelling against these truths is harmful.
You're saying rebelling against these millenia old "truths" is dangerous.
You point to the Communists and Fascists who tried to recreate systems.
If our nature is innate, and we inherit our behaviours the same way inherit eye colour (we don't. we simply do not) then the current culture of experimentation and reformation and reconsidering ideas IS JUST AS INNATE. And thus, we should not shun this EMERGENT PROPERTY THAT HAS BENEFITTED EVERY CULTURE EVER.

What I'm saying is that you're willing to eat chocolate without the slightest hint of sincere guilt at the fact that genuine slavery constituted the fact of its production, and that for most people, for most of human history, slavery was a case of be enslaved or enslave others.
The retroactive characterizarion and moral projection onto our ancestors, who did so for the brute fact that survival depended on it, as somehow morally lesser than us despite our indulgences and ignorance of our own slaves is a good example of how our own moral and ethical systems are much more sophisticated and abstract than we would like them to be.
If you lived by your moral and ethical code of today 150 years ago you'd be killed in any culture you were placed. And then you would be dead and right.
And everyone else would be alive and wrong.
Just consider it.

we had an unspoken rule that forbids infinite combos
not only because they are an extremely lame way to win a game

A) if you win, the rest of us are just gonna continue playing without you

I'm not talking about morality. I'm talking about how the perception of good and evil, right and wrong, normal and abnormal, changes all the time, and sometimes that produces better versions of our systems.
for your homework, I want you to question Peterson. I want you to ask, "Is there a scenario where his reason can be true, and the thing he's talking about still be false?" and "He makes it sound so tidy. Is the reality this tidy?"
I'm astonished at how well spoken you are. It's not how I remember you. You were never an idiot. But I think you have a little too much confidence in ideas you haven't put through the wringer... and you need to put ideas through the wringer. Perhaps you're afraid it'll lose the emotional potency that comes with a religiouslike conviction in a single set of ideas, that the shit will hit the proverbial postmodernist relativist fan. But be bold. Even if it means risking overthrowing these couple years of deeply helf beliefs.
Not sure when you'll vanish.
1. many cultures have had Godlike apriori convictions about their ways of life, that we can rationalize the utility of, but also ask if we can improve on the utility, or if it's even necessary. or if a culture can take a different form at all, and be improved upon.
2. these ideas you espouse are not innate or obvious, or you would have arrived at them without being told what they were, or at least changed the words up more.
3. if what was (the longest periods of time) is truly God (as Peterson puts it), then our nature to evolve, develop, and manipulate ideas are emergent elements that have withstood that test just as much, and should be seen as crucial to our survival as a species as our traditions. especially in the benefits they've produced, and increased success in gene propogation as a result.
