I feel like Mayushii is a bit different in the VN. Not a whole lot, but she has more moments where she's actually straight man to Kyouma's... kyoumamoments, while also having a pretty solid grip on his torment. It's like she's an airhead until she needs to not be, and she'll become a voice of reason of sorts. She does that in the anime a little too, but I've not seen it in yeaaaars.
I have no idea how big the demographic of... people who like Luka is to write her off as simply for that, but I wouldn't call it unlikely either.

As for luka, there are attempts to explain it, but the girl timeline and boy timeline luka are indistinguishable, and in general it's pretty obvious not too much thought went into designing his character. I mean they wrote him to have a crush on kyouma from the get-go. IIRC (and if i'm right, no surprise here) the backstory for this is just kyouma mistaking him for a girl.
